ANDREW JACKSON ROACH

Andrew Jackson Roach of Honolulu died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family on Sunday, July 4, 2010.

Andrew was born in Eldorado, Texas, on September 14, 1926, to Nettie Mae Espy Roach and Andrew Jackson Roach. He enlisted in the air force on his 17th birthday. After graduating from Michigan State University, he was called into the U.S. Army where he served for 27 years and attained the rank of colonel.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Andrew represented his country as the military attach at the American Embassy in Tokyo. He was decorated with the Order of the Sacred Treasure by the emperor of Japan for his contribution to world peace.

Andrew was a descendant of William Bradford, governor of Plymouth Colony for 20 years.

A warm, gracious and generous man, Andrew always tried to help others. He and Martha cooked for a homeless shelter for 10 years and raised funds tirelessly to build schools in Cambodia, the birthplace of their granddaughter Monique Brousseau, in whose name they sponsored a school in Siem Reap province.

In addition to Monique, Andrew is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dr. Martha Taylor Roach, daughters Andrea Roach Waxman and her husband Michael of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Karen Roach Brousseau and her husband Ron, and Leslie Roach-Laing and her husband Ian Laing, all of Honolulu. Other survivors include grandchildren Naomi Waxman of Appleton, Wisconsin, and Kyle Roach-Laing of Honolulu; nieces Julia Cobb and husband Vance of Odessa, Texas and Kathryn Gatlin and husband Ed of Midland, Texas. He was preceded in death by his sister Marjorie Roach Kramer in 2009.
