EVELYN YASUNO DOI SEKI

Evelyn Yasuno Doi Seki, 91, of Honolulu, Hawaii, died on July 14, 2010 at Straub Hospital. Mrs. Seki was born on November 12, 1918 in Waimanalo, Hawaii and raised in the Paia, Maui sugar cane plantation village. Although she was told that women do not need to complete high school, Mrs. Seki found her way to Yamanaka High School in Hiroshima, Japan and Kyoto Women’s College in Kyoto, Japan. She returned to Hawaii before the Japan attack on Pearl Harbor. In about 1948, Mrs. Seki purchased Hale Pua Nani Florist (House of Beautiful Flowers), first at 1227 Alapai Street and later at 1269 South King Street. An early pioneer as a business owned by a woman, Mrs. Seki worked long and hard at her flower shop, which was open 7 days a week. She was busiest during the holidays and special occasions when flowers were traditionally purchased. Quiet and reserved, her kindness and generosity attracted many loyal customers and many friendships over more than 50 years of business. She married Robert Shozo Seki in 1948 and soon had four boys: Glen, Craig and surviving sons, Arthur “Ata” (Sherrie) and Earl (Sheryl). She had 6 grandchildren: Matthew, Julie, Stephanie, Todd, Scott and Kellie. She always stressed the importance of education and hard work and the values of respect, kindness, fairness, and humility to her children and grandchildren. Graveside services were held at Punchbowl Veterans Cemetery.
