DONALD DOUGLAS CHAPMAN

Of Bainbridge Island, WA and formerly of Honolulu, HI and Kula, HI, passed away on March 23, 2010 in Seattle, WA. He was 82 years old. Born in Honolulu on June 7, 1927, he was the son of the late Douglas Merlin Chapman and Winifred Tait Chapman. He attended Punahou School, Admiral Farragut Academy, University of Hawaii, and graduated with a Master’s Degree in Architecture from Tulane University.

Don retired as Chairman of Chapman Desai Sakata, Inc. dba CDS International in 1993, an award winning architectural firm in Honolulu that he founded with George Hogan in 1958. He served on the State Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers, Surveyors and Landscape Architects, as an appointee of the Governor of Hawaii, for 8 years. He also served twice as President of the Hawaii Society/The American Institute of Architects. Don was made a Fellow of The American Institute of Architects. He received the Ernest H. Hara Distinguished Service Award from the University of Hawaii School of Architecture.

Don was an active sailor, a charter member of the Kaneohe Yacht Club, a member of the Waikiki and Lahaina Yacht Clubs, and sailed in both Transpac and Congressional Cup Races.

He proudly served in the United States Army and was awarded an Honorable Discharge in 1945.

He is survived by his wife Carol Hartley Chapman of Bainbridge Island, WA and formerly of Kula, HI, his daughters Denice (John) Kelly of Presto, PA and Elizabeth “Betsy” (Don) Lucarelli of Oceanside, CA, his brother Robert (Cara) Chapman of both Honolulu, HI and Bainbridge Island, WA, and grandchildren Katherine Malia Haddock, Christine Chapman-Haddock, Michael Kelly, and Jennifer Kelly. He is also survived by stepsons Joe Hartley of Kula, HI and Jeff Hartley of Truckee, CA, and their families.

Following a private scattering of ashes, friends are invited to join the family at a Celebration of Life on Tuesday, August 10, 2010, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Kaneohe Yacht Club, 44-503 Kaneohe Bay Drive, Kaneohe, HI. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests gifts in Don’s name be made to the UH Foundation, P. O.
