Joseph “Cupie” Costa

Posted On August 14th, 2010 -

Joseph "Cupie" CostaJoseph “Cupie” Costa
Age 91 of Kailua, Hawaii fell asleep
safe in the arms of Jesus, Aug. 4, 2010 at
his home with his wife, children, granddaughters,
and great-grandchildren by his
side. He was born November 8, 1918 to
Manuel and Rose Costa. Dad attended
Kawananakoa School until 9th grade.With
little education, he entered the work force. In the years to come, dad
worked at California Packing which later became Libby’s Cannery, the
Honolulu Advertiser, Honolulu Builders, 20th Century Furniture, Hawaiian
Mission Academy Bakery, where he was manager and baker, and Pearl
Harbor Naval Ship Yard where he retired after 32 years of service.
After dad’s retirement, he got bored staying at home and
decided to return back to work at the Honolulu Medical Group where he
became the maintenance engineer. He worked there for 10 years then
retired again only to get bored again. That’s when he decided to return
back to work at Castle Professional Center as the maintenance engineer.
Finally after three years, he decided to call it quits. That’s when he did a
lot of traveling and relaxing.
Dad was a “Joe of all trades.” He helped build several Seventh-Day
Adventist Churches and classrooms. He also worked side by side with the
late Dr. Robert Chung, M.D., soliciting funds for the building of Castle
Medical Center. And after completion of thehospital, he assembled all the
hospital beds together and did other duties to get ready for its grand
opening.
Dad became known for his brilliance in engineering, planning, and
creative skills. He always taught us to “work smart, not hard!” As busy as
he was, he always took the time out for his hobbies which included fishing,
building boats, model airplanes, radiocontrol airplanes which he flew
when he was in his eighties. He also enjoyed raising orchids and anthuriums.
Most of all, dad loved Jesus. He gave us loving counsel to
prepare us for our future and taught us to always love and honor Jesus.
His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the delight of his eyes.
As sick as he was, he made sure we were in church with him every
Sabbath. He was a member of the Kaneohe Seventh-Day Adventist
Church.
We will truly miss this great man in our lives, but his memories will live
in our hearts forever. We Love You “Big Pops.” Till we meet again.
Services will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 17th @ Kaneohe SDA Church
on Mokulele St. Visitation 5:30pm-6:30pm. Services: 6:30pm. Graveside
services Wednesday, Aug. 18th 2pm @ Hawaii Memorial Park.
Your wife Betty, children, grandchildren,
and great-grandchildren
