DEXTER WAINLEY LUM

Born in Honolulu, August 1, 1942, to Richard and Eleanor Lum. Passed in a tragic accident on August 5, 2010 in Manoa. Dexter graduated from Roosevelt High School, serving as senior class president; he was currently helping to plan his 50th high school reunion. While a student at UH Manoa in 1960, he joined Peng Hui Fraternity. He earned a degree in Economics from UH Manoa in 1965. Served in the U.S. Air Force for 8 years as a Communications-Electronics officer (which took him to Mississippi, Arizona, and Italy), retiring as a Captain in 1973. After leaving the Air Force, he became a real estate appraiser/broker up until the time of his death; he also was a part-time teacher at Farrington High School from 1996-2008. Dexter became a Mason with the Waikiki Lodge in 1973, serving as Master in 1986. He was a member of the Lodge Le Progres De L’Oceanie and received the Hiram Award in 2007. From 1986-’89 he was a Foundation Trustee of the Grand Lodge of California, Assistant Grand Lecturer of the Grand Lodge of Hawaii from 1989-2004, and a current member of the Jurisprudence Committee since 1999. He also served in many other positions in the Scottish Rite, York Rite, and other bodies of the Free Mason and Shriner organizations; recently appointed as Deputy of the Supreme Council of Hawaii & Guam. He was also a regular blood donor to the Blood Bank of Hawaii. Dexter truly lived a life of service with humility and a passion for helping people in any capacity he could. A round of golf, a good glass of wine, and a bowl of won ton mein would be a near perfect day to him. He was preceded in death by both his parents and brother Brenner. He will truly be missed by his survivors including his sisters: Suzette (Ralf) Oide, Sheree (John) Orsi; nephews & niece: Shannon (Sherrie) Oide, Shawnee (Aka) Lyman, Joey Orsi, Sam Orsi; grandnephews & grandniece: Makana Lyman, Pono Lyman, Coby Oide, Katrina Oide; stepmother: Charlotte Lum and countless aunts, uncles, and cousins. Masonic services will be held on Wednesday, August 25th, 6:30 p.m. at Scottish Rite Cathedral. Additional services and Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, August 27th, 9:00 a.m. at Shriner’s Beach Club in Waimanalo (carpool recommended). Casual attire.
