IRMA RUTH SILVA AGARD

Irma Ruth Agard (83), daughter of Luluhia Wond Silva and Louis Kalani Silva, died in Honolulu on September 6, 2010. Her father was the proprietor of the Silva Mortuary. She attended Sacred Hearts Academy, Kapalama Elementary, Lincoln Intermediate, and graduated from Roosevelt High School.

Right after World War II she was a Navy clerk at Pearl Harbor during the day, and then danced hula at Leroy’s Night Club and Restaurant in the evening. Later, she became an insurance agent for several companies.

Her passion was genealogy, so she volunteered at the Department of Health in the Vital Statistics unit where she helped customers with their forms and honed her genealogy skills. Eventually, the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands hired her as a genealogist and she helped hundreds of Hawaiians to secure their homesteads.

As a child, she and her sisters were members of the Betty Lei Hula Studio in the 1930s. They performed at venues such as Royal Hawaiian Hotel, which hosted pageants like “Hiku and Kawelu,” “the tenderest of all the Hawaiian legends,” Harry Owens Band, May Days, and Fetes at Queen Emma Summer Palace.

She is survived by her husband Louis Kruse Agard Jr.; sisters Billie Katherine Vlach and Rosemary Bowman; son Louis K. Agard III (Carol), daughter Lesley K. Agard (Ormond Hammond), grandchildren; Louis K. Agard IV (Joy), Kuni Agard, Adrian Agard, Kealakai Hammond, and four great-grandchildren; Joie, Alexus, Jacob and Amaru.”

Services will be held at Oahu Cemetary, 2162 Nuuanu Ave. on September 25, 2010. Visitation at 9:00 A.M. followed by services beginning at 10:00 A.M. with refreshments to follow.
