HILDA ROSA DEMELLO

Hilda Rosa DeMello, matriarch of an Island Portuguese family renowned for its leadership and hospitality within Hawaii’s early entrepreneurial business community, died Sept. 1 in Vancouver, Wash. She would have celebrated her 95th birthday on Sept. 10.

Parents, Lorinda and John F. Rosa, were proprietors of the oft reminisced, family-owned Oahu Bakery and Krispy Krust Bakery, which indulged kamaaina tastes for artisan breads and pastries for decades.

A graduate of Sacred Hearts Academy, DeMello was a member of the Young Ladies Institute for more than 60 years and well known as a gracious hostess to many grand parties and dinners at family homes in St. Louis Heights and Lanikai. She will also be remembered as a lover of Hawaii flora and cultivator of exquisite anthuriums.

DeMello is survived by son, Harold G. DeMello, Jr.; daughters, Linda DeMello Schofield and Marlene DeMello Faria; brother, Raymond Rosa; 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. She was a loving wife, mother and sister to deceased family members, husband, Harold G. DeMello, Sr.; son, Howard DeMello; and brothers, George and Alfred Rosa.

Friends are invited to join the family for a Celebration of Life Service on Monday, Sept. 27, at Oahu Cemetery Chapel, 2162 Nuuanu Ave. Visitation begins at 5 p.m. Services to follow at 6 p.m.
