HELEN SYBIL TURNER SMITH
HELEN SYBIL TURNER SMITH DURHAM: Helen Sybil Turner Smith was born in Orange County, NC on May 8, 1920. Her life on this earth ended on Nov. 22, 2010. She was predeceased husband Jack Smith, and son Peter Smith. She is survived by children Courtney Yoshikawa-Kuller (Kenneth), Dinah Weatherby, and Robert Mark Smith; grandchildren Matthew, Daniel and David Yoshikawa, and Jasmine Weatherby. Helen was a graduate of Braggtown High School and Watts School of Nursing in Durham, NC, and Western Carolina University. She was a registered nurse, and when Jack entered the Methodist ministry, she became a dedicated minister's wife. They served together in Misenheimer, Cold Springs, Hayesville, Clyde, and Asheville, NC; Kahuku Methodist Church and Ewa Beach Methodist Church, Oahu, Hawaii; and the Methodist Mission at Yuma Reservation, AZ. She worked as a nurse in Yuma and western NC, and as a substitute teacher at Kahuku High and Elementary School. She retired in 1987 to Durham, NC and was active in church and community activities. She also went on UMC work missions to Puerto Rico, Jamaica and Costa Rica. She had a great love for Hawaii and treasured her memories of her years in Kahuku and Ewa Beach. The family offers thanks to all who were part of her beautiful life memories. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in Helen's name to Habitat for Humanity, United Methodist Committee for Overseas Relief, to any cause dear to your heart, or by planting a tree or flowers to beautify the earth. The family is being assisted in Durham by Clements Funeral Service, Inc.
