Mildred (Millie) Chu Char
MILDRED (MILLIE) CHU CHAR Died at Arcadia Retirement Residence on November 29, 2010 at the age of 88. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Walter F. Char, MD, three children -- Bruce Char, Lisa Char-Smith, and Cynthia Char, and seven grandchildren. Her surviving siblings are Evelyn Leong, Winifred Fong, and Wellington Chu. Millie was born and raised in Honolulu. She graduated from Roosevelt High School and obtained a B.A. degree in education from the University of Hawaii in 1943. She earned an M.Ed. from Columbia University in 1946, specializing in the education of visually and hearing-impaired children, and taught school in Hawaii and Pennsylvania. She married in Honolulu in 1948 then left for Pennsylvania with her husband so that he could further his training and career in medicine (psychiatry). They lived for 14 years in Pennsylvania, where all of their children were born. The family returned to Hawaii in 1962 so that the children would grow up surrounded by their extended family. Millie was a full-time mother when her children were growing up. After they left for college, she earned an Associate Degree in Fashion Technology from Honolulu Community College. She loved music and took classes in ukulele, guitar, and piano in the latter part of her life. She enjoyed traveling and went on many land tours and sea cruises all over the world. Visitation 1:30 p.m. Saturday, December 11, 2010 at Community Church of Honolulu; services 2:30 p.m. Private burial will be on Monday December 13 at 10:30 a.m. at Diamond Head Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the UH Foundation Char Award in Psychiatry, or the charity of one's choice.
