Millie was born and raised in Honolulu. She graduated from Roosevelt High School and obtained a B.A. degree in education from the University of Hawaii in 1943. She married in Honolulu in 1948 then left for Pennsylvania with her husband so that he could further his training and career in medicine (psychiatry). They lived for 14 years in Pennsylvania, where all of their children were born.

The family returned to Hawaii in 1962 so that the children would grow up surrounded by their extended family. Millie was a full-time mother when her children were growing up. After they left for college, she earned an Associate Degree in Fashion Technology from Honolulu Community College. She loved music and took classes in ukulele, guitar, and piano in the latter part of her life. She enjoyed traveling and went on many land tours and sea cruises all over the world.
