NEAL PRINCE IFVERSEN

Oct. 19, 1912 – Nov. 30, 2010

Neal Ifversen, 98, passed away at home in Beaverton, Oregon on November 30th. He is survived by his wife, the former Ruby Wells of Vernonia, Oregon, a son, Thomas, and two grandchildren, Kate and Jack, of Lake Oswego, Oregon, & two nephews & a niece in California.

Neal was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, but his family moved to Los Angeles when he was an infant. He grew up there and attended Stanford University for a time before the Depression forced him to leave. A friend who was living in Hawaii found him a job there and he moved to Honolulu in 1932 where he lived until May of this year when he & his wife moved to Oregon to be close to family.

Neal was one of the founders of HMSA, the Blue Cross Shield medical plan of Hawaii, and its manager for a number of years. He also worked at Kaiser Hospital and other corporations in Honolulu until his retirement. However, he was most proud of some volunteer and honorary positions he held. He was a reserve police officer with the Honolulu Police Department from 1941 until 1973, serving very actively during those years. He was made a Detective in about 1944, the only reserve officer to achieve that rank.

Neal was appointed by the government of Peru to serve as its Honorary Consul in Hawaii in 1959. He served in that capacity until about 1988 and was decorated twice by the Peruvian government and once by the Peruvian navy for his service.

Neal was a Life Member of the Outrigger Canoe Club and an avid surfer and canoe steersman. There will be a private memorial service in Beaverton, then his ashes will be scattered near the Outrigger Canoe Club at a later date.
