December 26th 1940 –
December 9th 2010

69, Died at Queens Hospital after an accident put him in a coma. After 9 long weeks of struggle, the hospital removed him from life support, and he succumbed to the weight of his own mortality.

Tom Fanning was born in Berkeley California to father Erroll and mother Adabelle. After a solitary childhood in Oakland, he found some freedom at the University of California, Berkeley. He graduated as an Architect from the School of Environmental Design.

After marrying his wife Carol, the two set out for a new life in Hawaii. Tom eventually started his own architecture firm and in the following years won many awards for his work around the islands. Tom was known for being independant. With help from friends and family, he built his own home with his own hands. He held one of the first Hawaiian environmentally-focused art shows at the Art Academy. And he fought to preserve the historic architecture of Hawaii. He was a surfer, artist and musician.

He is known for his kindness, loyalty, honor and his gentle spirit. And like his father before him, he was one of nature’s true gentlemen.
