Real estate developer Herbert K. Horita died peacefully at his home in Royal Summit, surrounded by family, on December 20, 2010. He was 80 years old.
Horita was known as a "visionary pioneer" who loved to dream big. His visionary leadership helped to shape the growth and development of the state for generations. Horita founded Herbert K. Horita Realty, Inc. in 1959, just before Hawai'i became a state, sold his first home in 1957, and built his first residential development in 1963.
Horita found great joy in creating homes and communities for the people of Hawai'i. Over his 50-year career, Horita developed more than 13,500 single-family homes, town homes and condominiums; 500 hotel units; 336,000 square feet of commercial space; and 240 acres of industrial land. Horita's greatest achievement was the realization of his personal vision of Ko Olina Resort.
As president and founder of Herbert K. Horita Realty, Horita created numerous master-planned communities such as Ko Olina Resort, Newtown Estates, Royal Kunia and Village Park, and developed residential neighborhoods in Waialae Nui Ridge, Waialae Iki, Hawaii Kai, Salt Lake, Nu'uanu, Kane'ohe, Moanalua Gardens and Ka Ono Ulu Estates in Kihei; condos in Waikiki and Pearl City; golf courses in Ewa and Royal Kunia; and dozens of other commercial properties.
The influential businessman mentored hundreds of real estate professionals in Hawai'i, helping to launch well over one thousand careers in real estate, sales and development. Horita's company provided a springboard for dozens of other local real estate companies. And the construction of Horita's many developments created thousands of jobs across the state.
When Horita was inducted into the Building Industry Association Hall of Fame in 2007, he was credited with the foresight to develop master-planned communities that integrated residential, commercial, recreational and industrial projects.
Horita was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He graduated from Farrington High School in Honolulu in 1948. And he was a member of the Nu'uanu YMCA for over four decades. His hobbies included body surfing at Makapu'u Beach, joining pick-up basketball games at the YMCA, and attending University of Hawai'i football and basketball games as a dedicated fan.
Horita was preceded in death by wife Keola Horita. He is survived by 7 children and 13 grandchildren: sons Keith Horita (Stefanie C. Horita, deceased) and Joshua Horita (Laurie); daughters Karen Horita, Mari Horita, Johnelle Conching (Bruce), Jennifer Ta'a (Travis) and Jodilyn Ogawa (Jeff).
Memorial services will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Newtown (98-530 Ka'ahele Street, Aiea) on Tuesday, January 4, 2011. Open viewing from 1 :00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Services will begin at 5:00 p.m. Aloha attire. Flowers welcome.
