THOMAS MAHINULANI NOVIKOFF (MALANI BOY)

Of Honolulu and San Jose passed away at his home in Kaimuki on January 2, 2011. He attended Kamehameha Schools at Kapalama from kindergarten and graduated in 1999. He received his Engineering degree at the University of Hawaii Manoa campus and completed his Master of Science in Engineering at San Jose State. He worked as a mechanical engineer for BAE Systems in San Jose California.

Thomas was an avid cyclist and an active competitor. For many years, he has been respected as a top rider in many races such as Tantalus Time Trials, Dick Evans Memorial, and Cycle to the Sun. While living and working in California, he joined a cycling team and continued to participate and compete in the cycling circuit.

Loved by his ancestors, his parents Susan Carol and Thomas Mahinulani, sister Melissa Lehua, grandmothers Mildred Jenkins of St George Utah and Marmionett Magoon Kaaihue, hanai Auntie Charlotte Takemoto and family of Santa Cruz California, granduncles, grandaunts, uncles, aunties, cousins, nephew Riley, niece Jade and dear family friends.

The family wishes to express their aloha to Princess Abigail Kinoiki Kekaulike Kawananakoa for her graciousness.

Service on the lawn at Puu Ualakaa State Park (Makiki Round Top Drive) January 16, 2011 at 1130am. Donations may be made to American Cancer Society.

Carlos Robert Buhk, 71, of Koloa, Kauai, died at St Francis Hospice, Ewa on December 30. Born in Sheboygan, WI, lived in Mountain View, Ca., and moved to Hawaii in 1984. At Title Guaranty of Hawaii, he was the architect of the Docutrieve System, and was instrumental in initiating the conversion of thousands of paper files to digital files at its Record Center. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Lynette; son Ryan (Monica) of Koloa, Kauai; daughter, Laina (Jake) Maniscalco of Sunnyvale, CA.; grandchildren, Nicholas and Jordan Fregosi and Kendall, Kalei, and Makena Buhk; sister-in-law, Helen (Joel) Morris of Santa Rosa, CA; dearest cousin, James (Betty) Fischer of WI; and many friends and family in Wisconsin, California, and Hawaii. Robert Eugene Mytinger succumbed to cancer on December 20, 2010 at Straub Hospital. He was born September 24, 1926, in Belle Fourche, Butte County, South Dakota, to Hubert Chase and Gladys Matilda (Spence) Mytinger. He served in the U.S. Naval Medical Service Corps during World War II and the Korean conflict. He earned his public health degrees at U.C.L.A. and U.C. Berkeley. Bob was a Professor Emeritus of Public Health in the University of Hawaii School of Public Health. He worked in the Western Consortium for Public Health’s Burma Project under U.S.A.I.D. auspices, and served as Vice President of Community Relations for H.M.S.A.

Bob loved sailing, was an avid golfer and world traveler. He cherished the summers spent with his family at their Lake Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho, home. Of all his accomplishments, Bob was the most proud of having achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. Bob was the recipient of the John J. Sippey Public Health Western Branch Award and was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity.

He is survived by wife, Faye, daughters Heidi (Bradley) Gassman & Melissa Mytinger, grandchildren, Netta Jo Gassman, Laura Albers, Jennifer (Mark) Nelson and Christopher Maytag and three great grandchildren.

Inurnment will be at the National Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) at a later date. Suggested memorials can be made to the Hawaii Division of Boy Scouts of America, the Hawaii Junior Golf Program or the H.M.S.A. Foundation.
