ALIPIO L. ABILLANA Alipio “Al” Abillana passed away in Vancouver, WA on January 25, 2011 at the age of 80. Al was born on August 15, 1930 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Al served in the Army during the Korean War. Also retired as an electronic technician from Pearl Harbor after 28 years. He enjoyed golf and all sports. Survivors include his wife Susan Gilbert of WA, two daughters, Audrey (Vince) Salvador and Teresa (Jim) Ogilvie of HI; Grandchildren, Vanessa and Erica Salvador, Bronson Sterling, and Carly Ogilvie. Private family services will be held on 02/18 Friday in Vancouver,WA, and 02/27 Sunday in Honolulu, HI. Arrangements are under the care of Davies Cremation & Burial Services, Vancouver, WA. Arrangements in Honolulu are being taken care of by daughters Audrey and Teresa.

RICHARD S. BENDER On the evening of January 24, 2011, Richard S. (Dick) Bender passed away peacefully in Santa Cruz, California. Dick was born August 7, 1934 in San Francisco, CA. Dick was an outstanding athlete. His HOF record at San Jose State was 118 Wins- 5 Draws-6 Losses. He also possessed a remarkable capacity for friendship, an insatiable curiosity, and the natural gifts of a great storyteller. He is survived by his beloved Helen Eidemiller of Santa Cruz, brother Dr Thomas Bender of New York, daughters Rebecca Davis of Colorado and , Rachel Bender and Roxanne Greene of Las Vegas. The memorial will be held Saturday February 19th, 2011 at the Santa Cruz Elks Club 150 Jewel Street from 1-3 pm.

DR. KWAI LUM CHOY Age 95, of Honolulu, passed away peacefully at home on January 3, 2011 surrounded by his loving family. He received his dental degree from the University of Southern California and practiced dentistry for 58 years. He was well respected and was known for his meticulous work, his gentle touch and his compassionate and caring nature. In 1953, Kwai Lum was called to duty and served as a Major in the Korean War. He was the Chief Dental Officer in charge of the Dental Corp with the 2nd Medical Battalion serving 50,000 men near the front lines. His family was the most important thing in his life and he was devoted to providing them with a good life. His pride and joy were his 7 grandchildren. He led by example and was an inspiration to all of them. Today, Darrett and Aaron are physicians, Andrew and Austin are dentists, Dariann has her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, Shayna is an attorney and Kristen has recently been named Hawaii’s 2011 State Teacher of the Year. His legacy lives on through them in their personal and professional lives as they share his compassion, his kindness, his work ethic, his belief that living with integrity will bring dignity and respect, and the value of life long education. He is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years Ruby, sons Dr. Melvin (Vivian), Dr. Steven (Gail), Russell, daughter, Norene (Richard) Lum; grandchildren Darrett Choy, Aaron (Christina) Choy, Kristen (Matthew) Brummel, Andrew (Vanessa) Choy, Dariann (Kent) Fernandez, Austin (Amy) Choy, Shayna (Ian) Lum Robertson; great grandchildren Kainalu Brummel, Raiden Choy, Kyler Fernandez, Daniel Brummel, Camille Choy. He was deeply loved and appreciated by his family and will be dearly missed. He will continue to be a guiding light in all of our lives and will remain forever in our hearts. Private services were held. No monetary offerings.

ERMA LEIALOHA HENNESSEY LAU Of Mtn. View, CA, born Jan. 11, 1933, in Honolulu, HI, passed away peacefully on Jan. 20, surrounded by family. The youngest of 6 children of Elizabeth Ha’aheo & Thomas Hennessey, she grew up in Kaimuki. She graduated from St. Andrew’s Priory School, HI, & then the College of San Mateo, CA. She married Donald T.F. Lau on June 11, 1966, in HI before relocating to CA, where she worked at Annual Reviews for over 25 yrs. Family was the one thing that mattered most to Erma. She was a loyal fan (vocal too) at her children’s & grandchildren’s sporting events & was a 49er faithful. She enjoyed listening to Hawaiian music & dancing the hula, for fun & in competition. She is survived by her husband Don; children, Guy, Lori Castaneda, Ginger Ramirez (Chris), Liesl Guting (Albert), Deanna Lau; granddaughters Victoria Lau, Deanna & Mariah Ramirez, Elizabeth & Rebecca Guting; great-grandson Lucien, and sister Lorrine Stupplebeen.
