JOHN FAVO ALBIOS

John Favo Albios passed away at 6:06 a.m. Wednesday, February 23, 2011 in the Life Care Center of Waynesville at the age of 59 years, 8 months and 6 days.

Son of Dionicio and Kathryn (Lo) Albios, John was born June 17, 1951 in Honolulu, Hawaii where he grew up and graduated from high school. John was baptized at Calvary Chapel – Honolulu as a young man and was a member of Calvary Chapel – West Oahu until moving to Missouri.

In 2006, after living in Hawaii all his life, John moved to the Waynesville area to be near his brother Francis and his family. He enjoyed being near his family.

John leaves to cherish his memory his parents: Dionicio and Kathryn Albios of Las Vegas, NV; two brothers: Francis Van Kuren of Waynesville, MO and James Van Kuren of Jacksonville, AR; three sisters: Janine Snedicor of Hawaii, Sharon Mengelsen of Spencer, IA and Thelma Albeso of Haleiwa, HI; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A memorial service was at 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 25, 2011 in the First Baptist Church of Waynesville. Arrangements are under the direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory of Waynesville/St. Robert.

Robert S. Bonnell, 71, of Aiea, a retired Farrington High School teacher and a retired Army Reserve lieutenant colonel, died in Honolulu. He was born in Oklahoma City. He is survived by wife Ella B., son Robert “Robb,” daughter Dawn Ross, brother William, sister Patty Cohenour, stepmother Mikell and two grandchildren. Private services.

Leonard Drazen, 97, of Honolulu, a retired Army colonel and a military communications expert who worked for several defense contractors, died in Straub Clinic & Hospital. He was born in Baltimore. He is survived by son George H., sisters Esther Eidenshon and Dorothy Margolis, two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Committal services: 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Punchbowl. Additional services: 11 a.m. next Saturday at the Scottish Rite Cathedral.

Hideo Yamashita

HIDEO YAMASHITA

Age 93, of Kailua, a retired time keeper at Dole Corporation and a professional baseball umpire, died February 3, 2011 at Castle Medical Center. He was born in Honokaa, raised in Honolulu and educated at St. Louis College, where he played baseball for Francis Funai. He played in several baseball leagues before WWII and was a member of the 1938 Asahi team, which won the Hawaii Major League title that year. He served in the 100th Infantry Battalion during WWII and played on that unit’s legendary “Aloha Team” as it competed with teams in the Midwest, Arkansas, and North Africa. After the war, he began his career as an umpire, and he officiated at the games of visiting major league teams, Rainbow games as well as those of high school, Makule League and mountain ball teams.

He is survived by sons Samuel Hideo Yamashita, Henry E. Sheffield Professor of History at Pomona College, and David Matsuo Yamashita, an urban planner employed by Maui County; and two grandchildren, Katherine and Michael.

Private services were held.
