ANTHONY MARTIN FRIEDSON

Passed away peacefully February 27, 2011 at St. James Cottage Hospice in Vancouver, British Columbia. He was 86.

Born in Shoreham-by-Sea in 1924, Tony started his education in England. After several years at boarding schools, he attended Cambridge University, Jesus College; he then served in the Royal Air Force during WW2, finishing his degree at Simpson College. He earned a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa, writing his dissertation on Arthur Joyce Cary. Following a brief career at the University of British Columbia, he taught Literature and Creative Writing at the University of Hawai’i-Manoa from 1963-1984, where among other activities he helped to edit the journal Biography. His dedication, kindness and humor earned him the respect and affection of his colleagues and students.

Tony is survived by his sister, Bridget Raymond Nakama; children William Friedson, Manoa Friedson, Hugh Friedson; step-children, Brenda Burns Rice, Grant Burns, Lisa Erb Stewart and Stephen Erb; ten grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. At Tony’s request, there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, charitable donations can be made in his name to Vancouver’s St. James Cottage Hospice.
