ROBERT BAPTIST CORNIEL

77, born in Honolulu, HI, grew up in Kalihi. Bobby was a featherweight boxer in HI (1950s) for U.S. Army. SSG (Ret) Robert B. Corniel served as Troop Cook in Hawaii, Germany, Vietnam 1967/1970, and Generals’ Chef till military retirement 1972. Moved to Washington State (2003).

Bobby is survived by siblings Bert Corniel, Ruth Souza, Drusilla Burt; children Charmaine Kauth, Robert Corniel, Jr, Dominic Corniel, Sheree Corniel; grandsons Aaron and Jared Kauth, and Ohana.

Robert B. Corniel died March 20, 2011. Catholic and Military Honors services at Tahoma National Cemetery, WA, held on March 24, 2011.

Age 99, of Honolulu, passed away on Saturday, March 19, 2011. Born in He’eia, retired owner of Asahi Produce and Lecturer at UH Music Department, Ethnomusicology. Nakasone, widely acclaimed Grand Master Artist of Okinawan Uta-Sanshin, was a recipient of Japan’s Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays. He is also a recipient of the 1991 National Endowments for the Arts Folk Heritage Fellowship, making him a National Living Treasure in the United States and becoming the first Asian-American musician to receive such distinction.

Survived by wife, Mitsuko; daughters, Janet Ito, Jean Bennett (Kent), Susan Hill (Mark), Karen Nakasone, Kazue Miyano (Derek), Cindy Toguchi-Gourlay (Robert); daughter in law, Ellen Nakasone; sons, Takenobu “Bobo” Toguchi (Phylis) and Roy Toguchi (Marjorie); preceded in death by son, Clifford Nakasone. Eleven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren. Brothers, Harold and Richard Nakasone.
