RICHARD MILLER CLOWES

Richard Miller Clowes, a leader in California public education for over fifty years, passed away on March 23, 2011 at the age of 94. Born in Lahaina on October 16, 1916, he grew up in the Territory of Hawaii. Graduating from Leilehua High School in 1932. He graduated from the University of Southern California, in 1938, later earning an MS in 1950, Ed. D. in 1960.

He was Superintendent of Loara School District, Anaheim, Enterprise School District, Compton, and served in the US Marine corps from 1945 to 1946. Superintendent of Schools in Oxnard and Burbank. He was Associate California State Superintendent of Schools and later Los Angeles County Superintendent of Schools. He returned to USC, where he was Executive Associate Dean of Education until his retirement in 1991.

He enjoyed recounting experiences with summer jobs, working in O’ahu’s pineapple fields, the construction of Wheeler Field, the United States Army Air Corps base at Schofield Barracks. He remembered watching the landing at Wheeler of the first airplane to fly from California to Hawaii.

A man of many interests, growing taro plants, learning the Hawaiian language and researching the geology and ecology of the Northwestern Hawaiian Island Coral Reef Ecosystem Reserve. He was an active member of the ‘Ainahau O Kaleponi Hawaiian Civic Club in Orange County.

Clowes was preceded in death by his wife of seventy-two years, Hannah Springer Clowes and daughter Ann Hornney. He is survived by his daughter, Maile Hill of Long Beach, California; grandchildren Kimberly Marcel, Tara Morgan, Gregory Hill, Scott Hornney; five great-grandchildren; brother George Clowes and sisters Maile Willhite, Betty Lou Goris and Nancy Baker.

Dr. Larry Nobuo Matsuura, 85, died on February 23, 2011 at the Hi’olani Care Center in Honolulu. Dr. Matsuura was born July 11, 1925 in Waialua, Hawaii. He was a retired psychologist and a veteran of the U.S. Army Military Intelligence in post World War II Japan.
