HELEN LAMB HENDERSON CHILLINGWORTH

Passed away in Honolulu on March 28 2011. Helen was born in Hilo on November 28, 1918, the daughter of Lydia Leimakani Macy and James Henderson. She grew up at Moani Ke’Ala, the family home in Pi’ihonua, with sister Lei (Hutchinson), brothers Jack and Harold James (“Sonny”) Henderson, and was watched over by her beloved Kami-san. Helen graduated from Punahou School Class of 1935 and went on to LaSalle College in Boston graduating with a Liberal Arts degree.

Helen married Selden K. “Buddy” Chillingworth on December 16, 1939, the starting point for 50 years of supreme compatibility and shared happiness. Their wedding at Moani Ke’Ala was truly an event to remember. In honor of the occasion, family friend Helen Desha Beamer gifted the bride with a song, “He Makana.” This was one of three songs – “Kimo Hula” (for Helen’s father) and “Moani Ke’Ala” (for her mother) were the others – Mrs. Beamer wrote for the Henderson family.

Helen spent her married life in Honolulu, surrounded by a fun-loving and close-knit circle of friends and relatives. She enjoyed a good book, long walks on Kahala Beach, the lovely music of the Farden ladies, and evenings entertaining loved ones on the lanai at her home in Waialae Kahala- often ending in fried chicken ordered up from Rueben’s in Kahala Mall. Her reserved manner camouflaged an absolutely wicked sense of humor and a resilient, ever-young, and relentlessly positive spirit.

Helen was so fortunate to have had the loving professional care of the staff at Hale Ola Kino over the last four years. Her family is profoundly in their debt.

At Helen’s request, there will be no funeral or memorial service. Those who wish to honor her memory may choose to contribute to The Daughters of Hawaii, 2913 Pali Highway, Honolulu, HI 96817.

Helen is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and cousins, as well as the children of her lifelong friends, to whom she has always been Aunty Helen. We are grateful to have had you for as long as we did and so deeply saddened to be parted. We will miss you terribly. Aunty Helen, A hui hou.
