Alverna Ululani Y. K. Yuen, 82, of Alewa Heights passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 17, 2011. Born and raised in Pauoa, she graduated from Sacred Hearts Academy, Class of 1947. After high school, she worked for her father’s auto parts company. She married Kenneth who was her husband for 59 years and they raised four sons.

Alverna volunteered at Maryknoll Grade School where she and best friend, Lucille Druecker started Maryknoll’s first snack bar. She was an avid sportswoman, competing as a ranked badminton player, and playing tennis and golf with friends and family members. She loved to fish, cook, sew, and play cards with friends and her grandchildren. Her home became the central location for get-togethers and celebrations. She enjoyed preparing a weekly dinner for family members living in Hawaii and looked forward to their company.

Once the demands of homemaking subsided, Alverna returned to work as an Executive Secretary with Brewer Environmental Industries (BEI) where she would retire after 20 years of employment. During her years at BEI, she was a member of the Professional Secretaries International. She enjoyed following BEI’s softball teams during their annual neighbor island tournaments.

During her retirement years, she and Kenneth made about 3 trips yearly to visit her sons, grandchildren, nieces and nephews living on the mainland. These trips often included side trips to Las Vegas. She became a member of Halau Hula Kamamolikolehua and enjoyed performing with the troupe. She opened her home to her halau members for practices.

Alverna worshiped at Blessed Sacrament Church where she was baptized, confirmed and married. She is survived by husband, Kenneth, sons, Kevin, Chris (Norine), Kent (Lynn) and Kenn (Kimberly), grandchildren Sondra, Alika, Ryan, Garrett, Derrick, Kainoa and Keahi, sisters Audrey Vance and Alexa Hashimoto, brother Alexander Ho and hanai sister, Catherine Dela Pena.

Alverna’s warmth, kindness and love will be dearly missed.
