After battling leukemia for over two years, Alfred B. Fernandes, Jr. passed away on Sunday, June 12, 2011, in Seattle, Washington at the age of 60. His wife, Mary Ann and older brother, Steve were by his side. Al, the youngest of eight children was born in Lihue, Kauai to Alfred B. and Ruth (Matsushige) Fernandes. The family lived in Kapaa, Kauai where he graduated from Kapaa High School. Al earned a bachelor's degree in Accounting from the University of Hawaii and began his public accounting career in the Honolulu office of the international accounting firm, Arthur Young & Company, which later became Ernst & Young LLP. After a distinguished 30-year career, Al retired from Ernst & Young LLP as the partner in charge of the Tax Department. Not ready to settle down, Al joined the accounting firm of KMH LLP as their senior tax partner specializing in tax and business consulting services. Despite his illness, he continued to actively consult with clients and friends on business and tax matters from his hospital bed. Over his 38-year professional career, Al distinguished himself as one of the foremost taxation experts in Hawaii. Included among his clients were some of Hawaii's largest hotel operators, real estate developers, retailers, non-profits, financial institutions and healthcare providers. In recent years, Al became active in assisting high technology and media companies and other investors seeking to help diversify Hawaii's economy. Al was widely respected as one of Hawaii's leading authorities on Federal and Hawaii State taxation and previously served as Chairman of the Hawaii Tax Review Commission. Besides bringing to his personal and business relationships intelligence, deep knowledge and perspective from decades of experience, he also brought character, professionalism and personal integrity. Al was generous with his time and his tax expertise with colleagues, friends, non-profit organizations and clients. He took great pride in mentoring other accountants and challenged them to excel and succeed. He was very highly respected as a trusted advisor by business leaders in the private sector and by State officials in the Department of Taxation and Legislature. For many years Al co-authored the desktop reference book, Taxes of Hawaii. Al held a deep belief in Noblesse Oblige (privilege entails to responsibility) and served our community as a leader and supporter of many nonprofit organizations, including the Boy Scouts, the Hawaiian Humane Society, Maryknoll School and the Hawaii Science and Technology Council, among many. The Hawaii Society of CPA's awarded him their Public Service Award in 2008 for his many contributions to the community. While Al contributed much to the community, he held a special affinity for the Boy Scouts. His dedicated service to the scouting program included serving as Cubmaster for Pack 42 since 1988 where he loved to run the Pinewood Derby races for the Pack and the annual Makahiki. Al was also active at the district and council level where he served in a variety of leadership roles on the Council's Executive Board including Council Commissioner and most recently Treasurer. In recognition of his service to Scouting he was awarded the Silver Beaver Award in 2002, which is the highest honor a local council can bestow upon a volunteer. Al is survived by his wife of 37 years, Mary Ann, daughter, Tanya Fernandes, son, Alfred F. Fernandes, and his very beloved pets, Biscuits, Pogo, and Latte. Predeceased by oldest brother, James Fernandes, surviving family members also include siblings Marjerie Franklin, Alan Fernandes, Adele Baptiste, Patricia White, Steven Fernandes, Judith Nakamura, and many nieces and nephews. Al will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
