ABRAHAM T. K. COCKETT

82, died on August 16, 2011 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease in Logan, Utah.

At the family’s request, a private service was held.

Abe Cockett was born on September 4, 1928 in Maui, Hawaii to Noah and Mary Kekahu Cockett. He was raised as one of 12 children and he learned from an early age that hard work, perseverance, and education are the keys to success.

Abe attended Kamehameha School and put himself through college on a 4-year basketball scholarship. Abe and his wife, Willia, met in college and married on March 23, 1951 shortly after they graduated. Abe continued his studies and completed his medical degree at the University of Utah in June of 1954. He did his surgical residency at UCLA, and then the family moved to San Antonio, Texas, where Abe served 2 years as a captain in the Air Force. Abe went on to become an associate professor at UCLA.

In 1969, Abe and Willia decided to move their family to Rochester, New York as Abe had accepted a full professorship at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Abe combined teaching and research responsibilities with a private practice and developed a national and international reputation as a renowned urological surgeon specializing in kidney transplants and male infertility. During his 30 years at the University of Rochester Medical Center, Abe trained 30 medical residents. He also authored numerous medical journal articles and textbooks.

After Abe and Willia retired in 1999, he and Willia lived in Park City, Utah while they built their dream home in Waianae, Hawaii. They divided their time between the two homes.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, and his 3 children, Shannon Cockett of Washington, D.C., Catherine (Cockett) Deutsch of Ventura, California, and John Cockett of Mendon, Utah, and their 5 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.

Arrangements were made through the Allen-Hall Mortuary of Logan, Utah and in lieu of flowers; the family asks that any donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.
