“KONA” SMITH

Donald Caleb “Kona” Smith 77, passed away on August 3, 2011.

A memorial service followed by the scattering of ashes and then a Celebration of Life for Kona and his Mom and Dad will be held at Pokai Bay Beach Park at the Heiau on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at 10:00a.m.

Kona was born on March 22, 1934 in Kapaa Kauai to Arthur E. and Grace V. Smith. He grew up in Honolulu and attended Punahou Schools and went on to study and graduate with a degree in Architecture from Washington State University. He served his country in the United States Army for 5 years as a 2nd Lieutenant. He spent numerous years as the Assistant Manager at the Ilikai Hotel in Waikiki and was later promoted to Operations Manager. Kona then set his LEGACY at Waianae High School teaching Hawaiian Studies and also took on the challenge and privilege of being the advisor for the Senior Classes and the Hawaiian Club. Kona was a wonderful and talented man who had a great gift to love and give unconditionally to ALL the many friends, colleagues and students that came into his life along his journey’s. He had the ability to make everyone around him smile and laugh no matter what the circumstances, but most of all he loved his Hawaiian Heritage and his roots and sharing that with everyone! Kona touched many lives in such a positive way and he will live on in their hearts forever!

Kona is survived by his Hanai daughters Pili Smith and Precious Smith, his Hanai son Tuan Luu, his brother Arthur H. Smith, his sister Noella Sherwood and the many Aunties, Uncles, Cousins, Nieces and Nephews.

Kona protrays the true meaning of ALOHA:
A – akahai (kindness expressed with tenderness)
L – lokahi (unity, expressed with harmony)
O – ‘olu ‘olu (agreeable, expressed with pleasantness)
H – ha’a ha’a (humility, expressed with modesty)
A – ahonui ( patience, expressed with perseverance)
