Atsuo Nishioka

Atsuo Nishioka, 88, of Hilo, a retired supervising building inspector for the Hawaii County Department of Public Works and retired chief instructor for Hilo Hongwanji Kendo Club, died in Hilo Medical Center. He also was an Army veteran with the 232nd Engineer Battalion and 442nd Regimental Combat Team who served in World War II. He was born in Kau, Hawaii. He is survived by sons Newton, Owen and Curtis; daughter Lorna Yamashiro; brother Norman; sisters Akiko Morinaga, Karen Takemoto and Sumie Kimura; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Visitation: 2 p.m. Saturday at Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin, 398 Kilauea Ave. Services: 4 p.m.
