EUGENE KWAI YUEN CHING

Eugene Kwai Yuen Ching lived a beautiful life for 93 years. He saw so many changes during that time and he was ready to move to the mansion the Lord had prepared for him. As a young boy, he lived and played in Waikiki where his father had a cottage complex on Beach Walk. He was married to Mable C.S. Chang for 26 years and Tomi Ching for 35 years. An officer and veteran of World War II, he worked for and retired from the State of Hawaii Dept of Health in 1972. He enjoyed life to the fullest. He enjoyed meeting new friends from all over the world, playing bridge and mahjong. He was the oldest member of 24 hour fitness where he enjoyed exercising and meeting new friends. His motto was, “health is wealth”. He is survived by: his daughter, Emily Chang; his son, Christopher (Roxanna) Ching; six grandchildren; and six great grand children. He will have a military burial and funeral service at the National Veterans’ Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl on September 6, 2011 at 10:30 AM. ROBERT STANLEY “STAN” MORKETTER

Robert Stanley “Stan” Morketter, a resident of Honolulu for 33 years, died at home on August 10, 2011. Born in Whittier, CA. in 1924, Stan excelled both in the classroom and the swimming pool and won a scholarship to UC Berkeley at age 17. At Cal, he set a national intercollegiate freshman 50-yard freestyle record and was the Cal record holder in the 100- yd free in ’42 and ’43 before serving in the Army for 3 years (Pacific Theater). Returning to Cal in ’46, he excelled in swimming and water polo and was a two-time member of the NCAA All-American Swim Team. He qualified for the ’48 Olympic National Trials but did not compete due to employment obligations. During college, Stan was a member of many academic and social clubs including Tau Beta Pi, Circle C Society and was the President of Skull and Keys, Beta Beta, and Kappa Sigma Fraternity. After graduating in ’48, Stan began his career as an engineer at Proctor & Gamble and went on to run Atlas Corp.’s French operations in Europe (’58-’64) before returning to Oakland, CA as President of Global Associates. He lived in Piedmont, CA until moving to Honolulu in ’79 where he joined Tori Richard as CFO, retiring in ’96. He was an active member of Oahu Country Club and traveled extensively with his wife Sally. His great honors included being inducted into the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame for swimming and water polo in ’93 and receiving the Kappa Sigma “Beta-Xi Man of the Century” award in ’01. He was preceded in death by his first wife Jo (Crane) in 1978 and is survived by his devoted wife of 32 years, Sally, daughter Cyndy Chiles (husband John) of Piedmont, sons Bob of Hayward, CA and Thierry of Pleasant Hill, CA, three grandchildren, four step-children and nine step-grandchildren.
