Irmgard Ebner Castillo

IRMGARD EBNER CASTILLO

The forever fabulous Irmgard “Irmi” Castillo lived an exceptional life. She passed on August 10, 2011, surrounded by her family at her side in Poulsbo, Washington. A survivor of stage four Ovarian Cancer, Irmgard had fought the disease for seven years.

Irmgard Ebner was born in Starnberg, Germany, on November 28, 1927. She met her husband, US Army Sergeant Philip Nabearato Castillo, of Waipoli, Kauai, at a USO dance. The couple married in 1947, and the following year, the young war bride left Bavaria with her husband and infant son for a new life in Hawaii.

Irmgard lived life to its fullest. A natural beauty, she made it a point to be healthy and strong. As a youngster, Irmgard was one of the few people to swim across the chilly, alpine Lake Starnberg, the second largest lake in Bavaria. She swam, walked and exercised daily throughout her life.

Irmgard was an independent woman and lifelong learner who always took the chance to learn or do something new. She had a variety of vocations, but most enjoyed being an entertainer and singer at the Brauhaus in the International Marketplace in Waikiki during the 1970s. She was a world-class traveler. A woman of style and grace, Irmgard made lifelong friends within minutes wherever she went, and even while on the way. She warmly welcomed everyone into her life with a natural curiosity and charming smile.

Nothing was more important to Irmgard than her family. Now reunited with her husband, mother and father, she leaves fond memories for her son Philip Castillo (Faith); daughters Susan Santiago (Thomas); Betty Mumm (Alan); and Lina Caroline Heil (Michael); grandchildren Brandon, Briana, Adam, Aaron, Isaac and Liane; great granddaughters Micah and Eri; sisters Philoma and Annie, and brother Biwi Ebner; extended family; those who call her their second mom; and friends around the world.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, at the Valley of the Temples Chapel Lanai, Kaneohe. Online condolences: www.hawaiifuneralservices.com.
