WALTER RUSSELL DEWEESE
September 9, 1919 –
August 26, 2011

Formerly of Hilo and Honolulu, passed away at his home in Largo, Florida. With him was his wife and soulmate of 65 years Elsie Takami Deweese and his daughters.

Russ came to Hawaii via WW II and the U.S. Army from Newark, Ohio. He met Elsie, the love of his life, and they married upon his return to Hawaii after his discharge.

They lived in Honomu with the Reverend Shiro Sokabe, then moved to Hilo.

Walter worked for the Moses Company, leaving as it’s Vice-President to be the Purchasing Agent for the County of Hawaii.
He was active with the Church of the Holy Cross and the Waiakea Lions Club.

Walter is survived by his wife, Elsie; son, Garen; daughters, Sherry, Amy and Mary Lou; 6 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.

A memorial service was held at the Chapel On The Hill church in Largo, Florida.

SHEILA WEST GARDINER

Born in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, in 1921, and a kama`aina of Honolulu since the early 1970s, she joined her predeceased daughters Erica Krasovsky and Kendall Coen on August 13, 2011, at the age of 89. She is survived by her son, Duncan Craig, (Joan Craig), grandchildren Sean Craig, Kai Craig, and David Bowen, great-grandchildren Henry Craig and Tyler Garnett Craig, all of California, and by her many friends in Hawaii, the Mainland, England, and Australia, who will miss her “uniquely Sheila” presence.

Throughout the years she was involved in FACE (Faith Action for Community Equity), assisted children with special and exceptional needs as a Foster Grandparent, helped with IHS meals preparation, Meals on Wheels deliveries, and numerous other activities addressing special needs children, homelessness, hunger and social justice.

A member of the Academy of American Poets, and a recipient of the Ragdale Foundation’s Frances Shaw Fellowship for Women Writers in 2000, poetry was her passion, with numerous poems published locally and on the Mainland or simply shared with friends.

A “Celebration of Life” memorial service will be held at the Church of the Crossroads, United Church of Christ, 1212 University Avenue, Honolulu, at 3pm, on Saturday, October 1. Casual attire.
