HORACE “WILLY” WILLISTON V

Passed away on November 4, 2011 at age 87. He was born in Salem, OR on January 23, 1924, 1st son of Bess and Horace Williston IV. They moved to Chicago where he later graduated from Hyde Park HS in 1941. He attended Wilson JC where his dad taught English and entered U. of Chicago that fall. Called to active Army duty, Willy tested well in languages and was sent to study Japanese language and culture at Yale and to a school specializing in breaking enemy codes. After VJ Day Willy was discharged and entered UC Berkeley on the GI Bill to study Japanese History and related subjects (BA ’47; MA ’51).

Willy married Eleanor Scott in 1949 and moved to Japan in 1952 to work for the Army as a civilian. He and family moved to Hawaii in 1958 where he worked at Ft. Shafter as a Military Intelligence Research Analyst. In 1986 he retired and enjoyed working at a friend’s baseball card shop for 6 years.
Willy was an active member of the Windward United Church of Christ since 1958. He happily volunteered for many organizations including WUCC, Am. Cancer Society, Kailua Elem. School, Kailua Library, Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden, and the Senior Center in Kailua. He was an avid bridge player and gardener, loved Jeopardy and crosswords, and was a proud member of the ROMEOs retiree group. His wonderful dry sense of humor and intellectual curiosity will be sorely missed.

Willy is survived by his wife, Ellie; children Jim Williston, Kay Holmes, Mary Davis (John), and BJ Williston (Mike Gaughan); and grandchildren David Holmes, and Steven, Kally, and Kellen Gaughan. He was predeceased by his brother Jim.

A memorial service will be held in June of 2012. Donations to St. Francis Hospice or Windward United Church of Christ in his memory are welcome.
