ROSE CHOY LOO CHING

Born March 2, 1914 and died peacefully on December 3, 2011
Wife, mother, friend, farmer, orchid cultivator and developer. Rose farmed in Koko Head Area and then moved to Waianae in 1949. At Koko Head they nourished and raised crops for WWII efforts supplying as many as 1,000 bunches of radishes a week for military use.
While raising hogs, Rose and Jack were breeders of English Large Black Pedigree and Landrace hogs. She was so successful in breeding the Landrace hogs, that she was able to ship them to Japan, Indonesia and the Philippine Islands. Roofs had to be built over these hog pens because white Landrace pigs would get sunburned in the Waianae sun.
As an orchid producer and cultivator, she supplied many local florists (Watanabe, Sweet Leilani, Beretania, City and Stanley Ito) and Sears with her orchid blossoms and plants. She was successful in cultivating a rare hybrid white dendrobium and named the awarded blossom after her deceased mother, Irene Choy. In 1957 Rose was named the “ORCHID MAN OF THE YEAR”.
In her spare time Rose belong to many senior citizen clubs in the Waianae area, was a Boy Scout Leader, a 4-H club leader and was a contributing member of the Waianae community for over 60 years.
“FARM MANAGER, HOUSEWIFE AND MOTHER ALL IN ONE” (was the title of the article in the Sunday Advertiser on July 12, 1959)
It said and I quote, “Rose Ching is a remarkable and energetic women. Wife of Jack Ching, whose stock breeding farm in Waianae produced championship Landrace pigs to supply Island pig farmers. Mrs. Ching not only helps her husband operate the farm but operates a produce farm on her own — with the help of her capable sons” ……
“At this years 50th State Fair, Mrs. Ching was in charge of the livestock and produce exhibits. One of her husband’s prize hogs won the grand prize in the livestock show”
Predeceased by husbands, Wallace B. Loo and Jack D.S. Ching. she is survived by daughter: Beverly B.L. (Harold) Zane and sons Melvin W.M. Loo, Leroy Y.C. (Sharleen) Ching and Randolph Y.C. (Daria) Ching. Eleven grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and 6 great – great grandchildren.
