JAMES ST. JOHN WIECKING

Posted On January 15th, 2012 - Honolulu Star-Advertiser

JAMES ST. JOHN WIECKING

Sunrise: 24 October, 1960 Sunset: 31 December, 2011

To say James St.John Wiecking is a hero is to say Phil Mickelson is an average golfer
Sometimes a single word falls short when measuring a person’s achievements; sometimes it takes more than just one word and sometimes there are not enough words to suffice. This is the case with Jim Wiecking. Jim was fearless. He endured insurmountable physical pain and yet walking away from the fight was never an option. For the past seven and a half years Jim survived stage four-glioblastoma multiforme (GBM IV) Brain Cancer. And for those seven and half years, he was a fierce warrior.
If you were fortunate enough to know Jim, what follows is of no surprise. For those who did not have the great pleasure of knowing Jim, it is with hope that you be briefly acquainted with this extraordinary man.
Jim was multi-faceted in every aspect of his life; he was blessed with having an acute sense of humor, compassion, humility and a wicked swing on the golf course. With his charming personality Jim could make anyone smile instantly, with his humor he easily made many break into uncontrollable laughter. He was born smiling. Jim was a connoisseur of many things, including, but not limited to a well-chilled vodka-cran with a “smack,” anything and everything from Trader Joe’s, and the calamari steak at Buzz’s in Kailua.
Before his diagnosis of GBM IV in June 2004, he owned his own firm, “Endless Services”. He was highly respected by his clients due to his work ethic, professionalism and his high-quality craftsmanship. To this day people will comment on his work, which reflects on who he was and what he stood for..Integrity.
On the island of Oahu, there wasn’t a golf course Jim hadn’t played. Jim loved his time on the greens and in part it was through his love for the game that he gave back to the community. Jim initiated and coached the golf program at Damien Memorial High School; because many of the students could not afford golf clubs, Jim took it upon himself to seek out discarded clubs so every student would have the opportunity to learn and enjoy the game as he did. His excitement over the potential of a new player who he so hoped to be coaching for the following years, sustained him through surgeries, radiation, chemo, clinical trials, as he followed the triumphs of this student who went on to win the ILH Championship Tournament and the Hawaii State Tournament, a first ever for Damien High.
And so it is with heavy, loving hearts we announce the passing of James St. John Wiecking on the Eve of the New Year.
Jim’s survivors include his wife, Dr. Barbara Holthus-Wiecking and his son, Jeff, of Tokyo; his parents and caregivers, Ken and Donna Wiecking of Kailua; brothers Dr. Bill Wiecking and wife Sydney of Kamuela; Chris Wiecking and Tammy Luuloa of Kaneohe; two nephews, one niece, cousins Alicia and Helen and a host of very close friends.
Please join his family, Saturday, 21 January, 2012 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Kailua. Visitation 10:AM, Mass 11:00 AM, Inurnment 1:00 PM at Hawaii Memorial Park. Reception to follow at Koolau Golf Course.
