THOMAS DAN SARI “TOMMY”

Age 62, of Aiea, Hawaii, died January 5, 2012 in Straub Hospital, Honolulu, HI. Born in Buffalo, New York, he moved to Hawaii in his college years. The younger son of the late Judge William and Virginia Sari of Lackawanna, New York. Tom worked for the State of Hawaii as a social worker for 27 years and retired in 2003.

A gentle, warm-hearted person, Tommy was a loyal and fun-loving friend to many. He loved making people laugh and writing poems and short stories. Tom loved playing tennis. He was an enthusiastic Buffalo Bills’ football team fan and a faithful fan of UH sports. An avid reader, he was particularly knowledgeable about the Civil War and American Revolutionary War era. He loved planning and taking trips and vacations with his wife and family.

Tom is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Lynn Sari; brother, James (Sharon) Sari; their children, William Sari and Anneliese Parisi; mother-in-law, Sueno Miyasato; sister-in-law, Nancy (Alan Nitta) Miyasato and their children, Jolie Nakamura and Benjamin Nitta.

He is deeply missed by his family and many friends. We are with you always. Private services.

Age 70, of Haleiwa, rode his last wave on January 4th, and went to be with the Lord while doing what he loved most – playing in the ocean.

For those who knew him professionally, Harold was a master craftsman, legendary shaper, and innovative designer in his life-long profession. His legacy will live on in the thousands of boards he shaped with passion and precision.

For those who were fortunate to know him personally, Harold was soft-spoken, humorously honest, gentle and generous. He savored life deeply and fully, and lived his life reflecting his faith and love for the Lord in all he did. Those he left behind know he was welcomed into Heaven with the words “Well done”.

Harold is survived by his beloved wife, Susan Mary; daughter Kerry Renee Ige Krause, son-in-law Glenn, and grandson Gabriel; daughter Katrina Danielle Ige Parrish, son-in-law Christopher; sisters Shizuko, Michiko, Tamaye and
Patricia; brother James Ige; nieces and nephews.

Lila Sahney was a pioneering business woman in the fields of merchandising and fashion. After attending the Prince School of Retailing at Simmons College in Boston, she was a buyer for the Watumull Stores in Hawaii, as well as significantly contributing to the Hawaiian apparel industry. In the mid 1950s she went to India where she opened the first Indian ready to wear boutique in New Delhi and where she met her late husband, Brij Lal Sahney. After their marriage she retired from the fashion industry. While living in New Delhi, India, she was a successful author of an Indian cookbook, From my Indian Kitchen, she was a leader in the New Delhi American Woman’s Club and Chairwoman of the New Delhi Flower Show. She participated in numerous philanthropic & community activities in India and Hawaii. As Chairman of the Watumull Foundation, created by her late father G.J. Watumull, she oversaw the foundation’s activities which included providing scholarships to graduate & post doctoral scholars from India for study in the USA, drilling tube wells in water challenged areas of India, producing oral histories of prominent people in Hawaii (housed at the University of Hawaii), to name a few. Lila Sahney was a staunch member of Punahou School centennial class of 1941. An active contributor of Indian art to the Honolulu Academy of Arts, Lila Sahney worked continuously to bridge East and West. She is survived by her daughter, Sheela (Ashu) Sondhi, son, Gobind (Lisa) Sahney and three grandchildren. A celebration of her life will be held at The Pacific Club, Tuesday, January 24, 2012 from 4-6 p.m. The family has requested that no flowers be sent.
