HENRY F. ALVES

On a peaceful Sunday afternoon on January 22, 2012 and surrounded by his family, Henry F. Alves, replete in his 88 years, opened his eyes one last time and then slipped quietly from our lives and ultimately into his biggest venture yet.

With his passing, we who remain are honored to chronicle the full life he led. Henry was born in Kakaako on October 4, 1923 to Joseph and Mary Alves. He was a member of Mid Pac Country Club and a St Louis High School graduate of the class of 1942, and remained involved in the alumni association, serving as president for two years. He worked relentlessly on scholarship committees to provide aid to students and was a life long participant to the schools’ functions and activities.

After serving in the Army during World War II, his initial occupation was that of an auditor for Peat, Marwick, Mitchell and Co. Henry’s career fortuitously changed into land development when he went to work for Joseph Pao, developer of Enchanted Lakes in Kailua. As secretary-treasurer, and subsequently President of Hawaii Pacific Industries, he was involved in many development projects involving Amfac Inc and Bishop Estate, establishing business relationships with governors, senators and city council members. One of HPI’s biggest projects was developing the Francis H. Ii Brown Golf and Country Club, presently known as Pearl Country Club. Henry’s many years at Lear Siegler as VP of Administration and Engineering assigned him the responsibility of coordinating zoning request for reclassification of land use designation and input to the engineering, architectural and financial aspects of many projects. He was known as a tenacious businessman and a go-to guy for other businesses who needed his help and expertise to green light their projects.

His love for the industry was highlighted by his election to President of the Building Industry Assoc. in 1981. He also served as Director and VP of Land Use Research Foundation and Director of CILO. With his commitment to affordable housing, Henry became director of the Housing Coalition. His concerns for Kailua and the direction of this community thrust him into membership on the Kailua Neighborhood Board. Although he retired from the work force in 1988, he became President of the Developers Association from 1989-1991. His dedication to the industry culminated in his continuing commitment as consultant to Royal-Clark Development up until his recent illness.

He is survived by wife, Ruth, daughters Donna (Bryan) Nakasone and Judith (Darrell) Santos and preceded in death by son, Wayne. Henry was “Poppy” to grandchildren Heather, Ryon, Jason (Jada) and Cade and 2 great grand children, Dylan and Kylee. He also leaves behind a brother, Mr. Joseph (Billie) Alves.

Visitation on Friday, February 10 at St John Vianney Church in Kailua at 9:00 am. Mass at 11:00 am. Burial at 3:00 pm at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Punchbowl.
