HARLEY LESLIE NEFF

87 of Kailua died on Feb. 2, 2012 of complications from pneumonia. Harley was born on Nov. 20, 1924 in McClusky North Dacota. He and his wife Edith arrived in Honolulu in 1956. Harley was hired by Dole Pineapple Co. where he worked for 32 years. He became the Director of Can Manufacturing for the Dole Co.

The Neffs settled in Kailua and became active in the community. Harley was an avid antique car enthusiast and was a long time member of The Antique Car Club of America, The Classis Car Club and the Rolls Royce Car Club. He was very interested in family history and loved to travel. He had an amazing memory for details and frequently shared many stories with family and friends. His greatest joy was his three granddaughters .

In addition to his many friends in Hawaii and elsewhere, he is survived by his wife, Edith M., daughter Leslie Galloway and sons Brian and Carl. Granddaughters Allison, Laura Miranda, and sisters Geraldine Boyle and Darlene Saunders.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Donations suggested to PBS Hawaii. He will be greatly missed.

ALTHEA POAKALANI SERRAO

Age 77, passed away at home on February 2, 2012 in Honolulu. She was born and raised on School street and was the eldest child of Danny Ku and Mina Correa. She was a graduate of Sacred hearts convent and a 54 grad of Saint Francis. She is survived by her husband of 57 years John Serrao. Together they started Poakalani Hawaiian quilt patterns in 1972. She became known as Hawaii’s one handed quilter and was a major player in the revival of the art of Hawaiian Quilting. She co-authored with her husband numerous books and received a Pookela award. She was also the 2006 Hookahiko award recipient for her contribution to the preservation of Hawaiian Culture. She is recognized as master quilter by the thousands of students she has taught worldwide. Poakalani is also survived by sons Joseph and John of Las Vegas. Daughters Rae (Aaron) Correia and Cissy Serrao. Grand daughters Aalene and Thea Correia. Brother Wendall, Sisters, Dannette, Candace, Carolena, Cheryl, Camille and Carolyn. Visitation 9:00 am Saturday at Oahu Cemetery Chapel. Services at 11:30 am. Burial to follow at 1:00 pm at the family plot at Oahu Cemetery.

Herold Sherman, age 84, passed peacefully on January 28, 2012 in Hawaii. He was born in Detroit, Michigan.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane, four sons; Gerald and wife Kristy, John, David and wife Yukari, Michael and wife Betty, and 11 grand-children. He was predeceased by sons Elliot and Barry.

Dr. Sherman was a Professor & Executive Director of Institute of Safety & Systems Mgmt at U.S.C. He was also president of the Flight Safety Foundation.

Private service on Feb. 25 and Honor Guard inurnment on Feb. 27 at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
