89 of Honolulu, passed away Feb. 27, 2012 at Maunalani Nursing Center. Born in Honolulu, he grew up in Moiliili and attended McKinley High School. A World War II Army veteran and retired mechanical engineer, he worked at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard for over 40 yrs. He had earned engineering degrees from the University of Hawaii and Chicago Technical Institute. In retirement, he traveled and was very active in the Chinese community, serving as presi-dent for the See Dai Doo and Ket On Societies and Chung Shan Association. Survived by wife of 63 years, Florence W., sons, Randall B. and Byron K.H. (Kathryn), daughter Rhonda (Pierre) Atlan and grand daughter, Jordan, and sisters Marjorie C. ALAN STEWART HOLZMAN

Alan Holzman, age 79, died peacefully in Honolulu on February 21, 2012, surrounded by his family. A long-time resident of Kailua, Mr. Holzman is survived by his wife, Miriam Fuchs Holzman, and by his sons Gregory, Mark, and Patrick, a daughter Laura, and seven grandchildren. He was predeceased by his youngest son Peter. He is also survived by his siblings David Holzman, Daisy (Esther) Holzman, and John Holzman.

Growing up on Oahu, Mr. Holzman attended numerous local schools before graduating from Punahou in 1950. He received a BA in Economics in 1954 from Stanford University and an MBA in 1958, also from Stanford University. Mr. Holzman worked as the Chief Financial Officer of several Fortune 500 companies including NCR Corporation and Rohr Industries. He retired in 1979 as the Senior Vice President-Finance of Pacific Resources International in Honolulu.
Alan and his wife Miriam shared a love of art, fine wine, and museums. They traveled-often hiking, snorkeling, and sailing–to locations such as Midway, Tahiti, Fiji, Western Samoa, Rangiroa, Palau, New Zealand, and Australia. They lived for periods of time in Paris and London. They also piloted a barge through the canals of France, and sailed through the Greek islands, exploring historical and archeological sites.
During the last twenty-five years of his life, Alan was a serious student of World War II, concentrating on the islands of the Pacific. He wrote a family history and cultural memoir, and in it he described his experience of December 7, 1941 and life as a child living under martial law in Manoa during the war years.
He served on the Bishop Museum Association Board from 1982-89, and as its President from 1982-84. He was active in many local organizations such as the Pacific Aviation Museum, Friends of ‘Iolani Palace, Moanalua Gardens Foundation, the Hawaiian Historical Society, the Contemporary Museum and the Honolulu Art Academy. A member of the Outrigger Canoe Club since re1948, he loved surfing as well as sailing. He sailed his Ranger 26 for many years, mooring his boat at the Kaneohe Yacht Club. He was an avid member of the Pacific Club, where he regularly entertained his family and friends.
There will be no public memorial service.
Alan was admired and loved for his generous spirit, his strong intellect, and his quiet dignity.

70, of Kapa’a, Kaua’i, passed away on March 3, 2012. Born in Kapa’a, Kaua’i, after high school he received a Bachelor of Science degree from Brigham Young University-Provo in 1965, and then served in Vietnam in the184th Chemical Det 1st Air Cavalry Division, after completing his military service with honors, he completed his Master of Arts degree from the University of Arizona in 1972. Levon began his teaching career in 1966 as a primary school counselor, and taught at the high school and community school levels. He was an instructor of La’au Lapa’au (traditional Hawaiian Medicine) at the University of Hawaii at Manoa Kamakakuokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies (UH-Manoa), and who was credited in developing courses at UH-Manoa reviving interest in La’au Lapa’au, among a new generation of native Hawaiians. He also received in 2005 his honorary doctorate for his Mastery and contribution in La’au Lapa’au for his incredible knowledge of Hawaiian traditional medicinal practices and the Papa Ola Lokahi Kaonohi Awards for his commitment to the health of Native Hawaiians. Survived by wife, Jacqueline; sons, David (Kaleilani), Benjamin (Ka’iulani), and Jesse (Nicole); father, Leo Ohai; mother, Clara Ohai; brother, Nephi Ohai; sisters, Anolani Haiola, Roberta Livingston, and Laola Kau; 7 grandchildren.
