DORIS HARUMI HAKODA

DORIS HARUMI HAKODA passed away on President’s Day at the age of 98. She was born in Captain Cook, Kona, Hawaii, to the founders of the Mori Drug Store, Goro and Kikuyo Mori. Her parents were one of the first to open a pharmacy on the Big Island. Her father was a decorated medic in the Russo-Japanese War who emigrated to Hawaii and married Kikuyo Nakatsu. As a student, Doris played the cello in the Konawaena High School orchestra and provided the organ accompaniment for her Buddhist temple services. As a young lady, Doris taught Japanese and dress making to many students in Kona. She later caught the eye of Konao Hakoda from Holualoa, who married her right after he graduated from the University of Hawaii and days before he was sent to Europe with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team during World War II. Konao predeceased her in 2010 after 68 years of marital bliss. Doris and Konao enjoyed traveling the world. She was also an accomplished potter and embroiderer. Her cooking will be missed for her mom taught her the art of Hiroshima cuisine. Doris leaves two sons, Harvey and Gary, a daughter in law, Mary, two grand children, Mark Hakoda and Wendy Oshiro, a cousin, Yachiyo Iki, and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to recognize the following individuals, staff and organizations who helped Doris during her prolonged illness: Dr. Bret Flynn, Dr. James Kohan, Myleen Lumanog,RN, Kokua Nurses, Project Dana, CNAs’ Pyung Sung Choe, Chun Hee Kwak and Nelissa Asperilla. There are other individuals that space does not permit to be listed, but the family wishes to recognize them for their important contribution to Doris’s well being, especially her in-laws, friends, neighbors, extended family and former caregivers. A celebration of life will be held at Hosoi Mortuary on Mar. 18, at noon with visitation at 11:00 am. Internment will be the next day at 11:30 am at the Punchbowl National Cemetery of the Pacific. The family kindly requests no floral or monetary offerings please and aloha attire is suggested for those who plan to attend.
