PAUL T. DOUGLASS

Posted On April 6th, 2012 - Honolulu Star-Advertiser

PAUL T. DOUGLASS

Born in San Francisco, California on November 3, 1934, Paul passed away in Honolulu, Hawaii on March 27, 2012 at the age of 77. Paul graduated from Lowell High School in San Francisco, and the California Maritime Academy in Vallejo. After graduation, Paul married his childhood sweetheart Shirley Hansen. He then spent two years in the Navy, stationed in Inchon, Korea and Sasebo, Japan, before returning to San Francisco to begin a career at Matson Navigation Company. Matson sent Paul, Shirley and their growing family out to Hawaii in 1967, and they fell in love with the islands and their many wonderful friends here. Despite many calls for his return to corporate headquarters in San Francisco, Paul stayed in Hawaii until he retired from Matson after 43+ years, serving as a district manager over the years on Oahu, Maui, the Big Island, and finally, Kauai. Paul was extraordinarily proud to be part of the Matson “family.” The Matson logo was displayed everywhere — including on his mailbox. When he retired, he even arranged to keep his personalized “Matson” license plate. Paul’s love for Hawaii was reflected in his decades of service to the community: Boy Scout troop leader (Big Island & Kauai), Rotarian for over 45 years, service to the Kauai Chamber of Commerce, the Kauai Red Cross, the Kauai chapter of the American Cancer Society, the Kauai Independent Food Bank, and the Kauai Humane Society. Paul has served on the Wilcox Memorial Hospital board of directors since 1989 and became Board Chair in 1998. But of all his accomplishments, Paul was proudest of his family. In August, Paul and Shirley celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. Paul was an inspiration, a teacher, a sounding board, a compass, and best friend to his five children: Susan L. Douglass, of Hilo, Hawaii; Stephen P. Douglass, of Kaneohe, Hawaii; David C. Douglass, of Folsom, California; Sharon D. Mayo of Mill Valley, California; and Scott A. Douglass, of Lihue, Hawaii. Their hearts are heavy now, but they will remember their father’s wisdom, his easy laugh, his steady guidance, his wonderful stories, his generous spirit, and most of all his love. Paul was also a doting grandfather to Bobby, Danielle, William, Elisabeth, Laura, and Madeleine, and great-grandfather to Banner. Guinness will also miss his daily walks and companionship with Paul. A memorial service will be held in Paul’s honor on April 20, 2012 at 9am at the Kauai Marriott Hotel, aloha attire suggested. In lieu of flowers, gifts in honor of Paul Douglass may be made to the Wilcox Hospital Foundation to support the purchase of their new CT scanner, or the American Cancer Society to support building of a Hope Lodge for outer-island residents seeking treatment on Oahu.
