MABEL OI TOM CHEE

Mabel Oi Tom Chee, beloved mother, auntie, grandmother and great grandmother passed away peacefully on March 23rd, 2012. The fifth of seven children, she was born December 16th, 1911 in Kahaluu, Hawaii. She had recently enjoyed her 100th birthday with family and friends in a celebration of her long and productive life. Mabel will always be remembered for her kind and gentle spirit and the joy she found in life.

Mabel grew up in Kahaluu where her family grew rice and would ride horses over the Pali to bring crops to market. Later, her family moved to town and purchased a small grocery store near Like-Like School. Mabel met her future husband, Chee Wing Cho, a Chinese herbal Doctor, when he came to cure her of a serious illness after she fell in an irrigation canal. She recovered with his excellent care and five years later they married. Mabel worked at many jobs and at one time opened “Mable’s Crack Seed” store in Aiea. She enjoyed working for Marriot in a program for seniors where she made sandwiches for the University of Hawaii.

Gardening stayed Mabel’s favorite pastime. Well into her nineties, Mabel gardened in the Dole community garden on the slopes of Punchbowl crater. She always said it made her feel good to be “outside seeing the plants”. In addition, she was a dedicated volunteer at Foster Botanical Gardens. Many will also remember her skill with the crochet needle and her loving handmade gifts.

Mabel is survived by her four children: sons, Fred Chee, Calvin Chee and Alvin Chee and daughter, Dawn Chee Slowi. She is also survived by grandsons: Baron and Tyson Chee and Mark and Logan van der Pyl, three great grandchildren and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family wishes everyone who knew Mabel to honor her by enjoying the beauty of Hawaii’s flowers.

ELOISE UNG WONG MANIFOLD

Eloise Ung Wong Manifold passed away on November 4, 2011, from complications due to cancer. Ung, or Aunty Ung as she was known to family and friends, was born at home in Honolulu, to James and Yuk-Lin Ching (Eloise) Wong on September 24, 1930. She grew up in Honolulu and graduated from Farrington High School and the University of Hawaii. After graduating from the University, Ung left Hawaii on her first great adventure, going to work for the U.S. Army in Naha, Okinawa a place she had never heard of before that assignment. There she met the love of her life, George Thomas Manifold, and they were married in Japan in 1953. Together they traveled the world and enjoyed a wonderful life and many adventures together. Their escapades in the Far-East, especially in Korea, Japan, and across the U.S. are legendary.

After her loving husband and soul mate, George, passed away while they were on assignment in Okinawa, she volunteered for a new assignment with the U.S. Army in Vietnam. There she met many of her lifelong friends, including her closest friend Jim Ballard. Ung and Jim continued their love of travel and saw much of the world together. They made many friends wherever they went and were loved by everyone they met.

After retiring from the DOD, Ung and Jim build their dream-house in Henderson, Nevada, and they made that area their permanent home. Henderson thus became a destination location for family and friends from all over the world, and there were many great celebrations in their home. Friends from Europe, the Far-East, and from all areas of the U.S. were frequent visitors to Henderson.

After Jim pass away, Ung continued to travel, explore, and mentor many friends – old and new. Her many journeys to Ireland to see her granddaughter and great-granddaughters, to China to just see the country, and to all parts to this country to visit granddaughters and friends were occasions to celebrate. Ung will always be remembered for her spirit of Aloha, her generosity to everyone she met, and for her determination to do all things well.

Ung was preceded in passing by her loving husband George, her great friend Jim Ballard, her parents, her sister Janet Chang and by her brother Sammy Wong. She is survived by her son Douglas and his wife Pat, her brother Dick (Heddy), her granddaughter Kim McGuire (Husband – Vivian), grandsons John (Mechel), Michael (Holly), and Steven, and great-granddaughters Sarah and Katie McGuire, and Dylan Manifold and many friends, her nieces Geri Hosaka (Mel), Janice Jensen and nephew David Wong, and Jessie McKamey, her sister-in-law Sumiko (Susie) Wong, brother-in-law David Chang, and their families.

A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at the Community Church of Honolulu, 2345 Nu`uanu Avenue, Honolulu, at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, April 25, 2012. Visitation with the family will begin at 10:00 A.M. Interment will be at the National Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) at 2:00 P.M. In lieu of flower wreaths, please wear lei and dress in the spirit of Aloha, as she would want everyone to do. Donations may be made to your favorite charity in her remembrance. Memory letters and notes may be sent to djmanifold@comcast.net.
