CHERYL ANN MARIE APO

CHERYL ANN MARIE APO

66, passed away May 6, surrounded by loving family and friends. Born September 13, 1945 in Chicago to Charles & Lorraine Kadlec. She moved to Hawaii in 1967, fell in love with the islands, its cultural diversity, and decided to make it her home. She embraced local values, customs, and people. She was regarded as the blue-eyed blond with the big, warm Hawaiian heart. She had a deep love of her family and looked forward to luau celebrations, holiday gatherings, and the preparation of laulau for New Year’s.

Cheryl was renown in Hawaii’s hotel industry. She was the Director of Personnel, then Resident Manager of Hilton Hawaiian Village. In 1980 she moved to Hale Koa and was the Director of Food & Beverage and Assistant General Manager. There she was tireless, determined, selfless, passionate, and dedicated to the hotel’s employees and guests. Employees will remember her as fair and compassionate. She took the time to meet and welcome every new hire. She always had time to “talk story”. She delighted in hearing about their families, graduations and marriages of their children. She believed employees should be treated with dignity and respect. She spent great portions of her time mentoring those from disadvantaged backgrounds, she was a champion of the underdog.

Guests will remember her as gracious and generous. She was an advocate of the service member, insuring their visits exceeded expectations. She will be remembered for her wonderful lobby displays at Christmas. People came from all over the island to take
photos in the Victorian Parlor display she would lovingly craft. In 2008, the US Army reassigned her to Ft. Shafter but her heart remained at Hale Koa. Under her direction the hotel achieved a standard that has not been matched since.

She is survived by her husband, John Lee, Jr., son, Sean Ah Yen, mother, Lorraine, father & mother-in-law, John, Sr. & Maile Lee, sister-in-law, Jamie Yamashita, brothers-in-law, Jeff & Jay Lee, nieces and nephews.
