Marion "Sonny" Tavares, 88, of Hilo, formerly of Honomu, Hawaii, a Hawaii County Fire Department retiree, rancher and an Army veteran who served in World War II, died at home. He was born in Honomu. He is survived by wife Laura G., sons Skipper Tavares and John "Ringo" Roach, daughter Sandie Kaleikini, sisters Blanche Pakele and Roselyn Lakis, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Visitation: 8 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hilo. Mass: 10:30 a.m. Burial: 11:30 a.m. at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2. Casual attire.
