Joseph David Ahuna

JOSEPH DAVID AHUNA

Passed away peacefully surrounded by those he loved his wife, children, and siblings on May 3, 2012 in Indio, CA. He was born in Honolulu on November 1, 1943. Son of Joseph Ahuna II and Maude Waikiki Ahuna, he was a member of IATSE Local 665 and worked as a Grip and Key Grip for the film and television industry in Hawaii for many years. When his work took him to California, he worked as a Key Grip with IATSE Local 80. Later in his career he was elected president of Local 80 and retired as an assistant business agent in 2010.

He is loved and survived by his wife Joanie Ahuna, daughters Joelle (Eddie) Lee and Michelle “Kahea” (Kalani) Ching, son Joseph David “Kawika” Ahuna Jr., stepson Derric (Gracie) Teran; and his 8 grandchildren Jasmine and Jordan “Kamalei” Lee; Jonathan “Ashton”, Justin, Jonah, Joshua, and Joel “Pono” Ching; and Jadyn Ahuna. He is also survived by brothers Dickie (Irene) Ahuna, Archie (Fern) Ahuna, Walter (Donelle) Ahuna, and Pachec Yamashiro; sisters Doreen (Richard) Bell, Jo-Ann (Arthur) Carreira, Brenda “Leimamo” (Richard) Pua, Patricia “Patsy” (Kaleo) Kaina, Maude “Pi`ilani” (Steven) Tanaka, Donalyn (Leonard) Naihe, and Corinne Ahuna; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Kane`ohe on May 30, 2012. Viewing is from 10:30am-12:30pm. Eulogy and mass will begin at 12:30pm. A private burial will follow. Aloha attire requested. In lieu of flowers, to honor the importance of education in his life, the family suggests donations to Ke Ali`i Pauahi Foundation, 567 South King Street, Suite 160, Honolulu, Hawai’i 96813 in memory of Joseph David Ahuna to establish a scholarship in his name.

Age 89, of Kailua, Hawaii, passed away May 10, 2012 in Kailua. Born June 26, 1922 in Highmore, South Dakota. Dr. Holtzmann was a retired Professor from the University of Hawaii Department of Plant Pathology. He is a member of the Knights of Columbus; and past State Deputy.

PHILIP J.W. LEE, M.D.

Dr. Philip Lee was born in Honolulu on February 5, 1925. He died on May 13, 2012 surrounded by family. He graduated from St. Louis, University of Dayton, and Creighton Medical School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in World War II. His internship and Radiolology residency were at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C. during the Korean War. He was an army physician for 8 years. He was surgeon for the 29th Infantry Brigade, Hawaii Army National Guard and with the Ninth Corps at Ft. DeRussy during the Vietnam War. He retired as a Colonel.

In 1958, he began his private practice in Radiology by opening a main office and several branch offices. He was honored with a special recognition in 1970 as Fellow of the American College of Radiology as the first in Hawai’i to introduce Cobalt-60 cancer therapy, use Nuclear Medicine in private practice, and pioneer mammography. Community work he enjoyed most was Chairman of Nuuanu YMCA Board in the early 60s raising funds for the new building and swimming pool that are still enjoyed today.

He is survived by wife Terry Lee, sons Dr. Eric Lee (Susan) and Dr. Jeffrey Lee (Gail), daughters Robin Gyorgyfalvy (Martin) and Wynnona Lee, and grandchildren Derek, Grayson, Juliet, Morgan, Isaac, and Philip.
