PHILLIP JOAQUIN TORRES

Posted On June 6th, 2012 - Honolulu Star-Advertiser

PHILLIP JOAQUIN TORRES
December 30, 1950 – January 31, 2012.

Phil, a long-time resident of Point Reyes Station, CA, passed away unexpectedly in his sleep on January 31, 2012. He had just celebrated his 61st birthday, and was looking forward to celebrating his 30th wedding anniversary on March 26th, and his granddaughter Paloma’s second birthday in April. Of Azorean descent, Phil was born in Honolulu nine years before statehood, and grew up with his four siblings in Kailua, Oahu. He worked at Pearl Harbor after graduating from Kailua High School in 1969, and later left Hawaii to join the Navy. Phil had previously lived in San Francisco for many years, where he worked at the San Francisco VA Medical Center, and for a number of years, owned and operated a pizzeria. Phil eventually fulfilled his dream of becoming a police officer, and at the age of 41 joined the Fairfax Police Department in Northern California. He loved working with kids and helped many troubled youth turn their lives around. Phil was a dedicated community servant, and also worked as a part-time caretaker for a local cemetery. Phil umpired Little League games, and also coached high school softball and volleyball. He had recently started teaching volleyball skills to elementary school children.

Phil leaves behind his wife of almost 30 years, Robyn Torres of Point Reyes Station; daughter and son-in-law Jackie Torres and Nathan Slavik, of West Los Angeles, CA; daughter Mandy Torres of Cotati, CA; mother Jacqueline Azevedo Torres of Kailua, Oahu; sister Bina Torres of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii; brother John (Donna) of Haiku, Maui; brother Patrick (Joan) of Honolulu, Hawaii; brother Daniel (Yvette) of Roanoke, VA; granddaughter Paloma Maria Torres-Slavik of West Los Angeles, CA; numerous nieces and nephews; preceded in death by his father Louis Victor Torres and his father-in-law Ralph Treleven.

Although many hearts were broken on the day of his untimely passing, Phil’s generous ‘aloha’ spirit and life-long legacy of helping others will live on forever.

Services were held on the mainland on March 24, 2012. A private celebration of Phil’s life will be held on Father’s Day Sunday June 17, 2012 in Kailua. Donations may be made to a favorite charity in Phil’s memory.
