Leila “Lee” Elizabeth Kyselka
LEILA "LEE" ELIZABETH KYSELKA June 29, 1919 - May 10, 2012 Lee died May 10, 2012 at age 95. She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Will Kyselka, her son Jim DenBeste of Oregon, her daughter-in-law, Rosemary DenBeste of Washington, her former daughter-in-law, Gayle DenBeste of Oregon, grandchildren, Leslie Wilder & Michael Wilder of Hawaii, Paul DenBeste of Oregon, Michelle DenBeste, of California, Lisa DenBeste & Matt DenBeste of Washington, and eight great-grandchildren. Her son, Al DenBeste, and her daughter, Alois DenBeste Vernon predeceased her. Lee was born in Crawford, Colorado to Al and Leila Elizabeth Sanderson Ford, and raised by her Sanderson grandparents after her mother died in childbirth. She married Walter DenBeste and moved to Ellensburg, Washington and then to Portland, Oregon where she worked for the YMCA. After her divorce, she moved to Oahu in the mid- 1960s, where she held positions at the Nuuanu and Windward YMCAs as a program director. She was very involved with sex education and teen programs. After retirement, Lee was director of the Summer Science Program at the University Lab School and lectured in the Women In Transition Program at WCC and LCC. Lee and Will built their dream house on top of Tantalus in 1968 and many remember being entertained on Forest Ridge Way over the years. A highlight of her life was sailing on the escort vessel for the Hokulea's 1980 voyage to Tahiti. A celebration of her life will be held on June 29, 2012, at 5 pm at Church of the Crossroads, Honolulu. Please, no flowers. Donations can be made in her name to the Church of the Crossroads, Polynesian Voyaging Society or University of Hawaii Press.
