Edward A. Langhans

Posted On July 10th, 2012 -

EDWARD ALANGHANS
1923-2012
Dr. Edward A Langhans, Professor Emeritus, Department of Theatre and Dance, University of Hawaii at Manoa, passed away on April 28, 2012 in Honolulu. He was a member of the Manoa faculty for over 30 years and a nationally recognized researcher, scholar and author of numerous research and reference works.
A native of Warren, Pennsylvania, he served as an Army Air Corps P-47 fighter pilot in the European Theater during World War II. Following the war, he attended the University of Rochester, the University of Hawaii and Yale University from which he received a PhD in theatre history in 1955.
Dr. Langhans served for 12 years as the Chairman of the Department of Drama and Theatre at the University of Hawaii, where he directed, designed and acted in more than 40 plays, many of them from the 17th and 18th centuries. He was one of three Department faculty members who developed the plans for Kennedy Theatre at the University. Dr. Langhans also served on the faculty of the University of Texas for two years and as a visiting professor for one year at Tufts University. He received a Fulbright grant to conduct research in England in 1954-55, six University of Hawaii travel and research grants and three Folger Shakespeare Library fellowships.
In addition to publishing dozens of articles, reviews and chapters in books, he was the author of Restoration Promptbooks, co-author of the multi-volume Biographical Dictionary of Actors; Actresses, Musicians, Dancers, Managers and other Stage Personnel in London, 1660-1800 and co-editor of An International Dictionary of Theatre Language.
Although theatre history was his first love, as Chairman, he believed in building on the Department’s strengths. Consequently, he fostered the continued development of the Asian Theatre program into one of the strongest such programs in the English-speaking world.
At his request, no services are planned. However, donations in his memory may be made to the University of Hawaii Foundation, Friends of Kennedy Theatre.
