LAWRENCE MITSUO SHIMAZU
Lawrence Mitsuo Shimazu, 90, passed away peacefully in Honolulu. “A flower lei circlet, knows no loneliness,
as it hugs the happy traveler”-Haiku by Lawrence Shimazu
Lawrence lived a full and happy life having accomplished all that he wanted during his lifetime. He graduated from McKinley High School and attended the University of Hawaii and received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in Horticulture, Art, and Business Education. Few years later, he attended New York University and obtained his Master of Arts in Business Education and enrolled in the doctoral program. He was also initiated into the New York University Alpha Chapter of Delta Pi Epsilon (an honorary graduate fraternity in Business Education). On his sabbatical leave, he attended Hitotsubashi University in Japan to expand his knowledge in Japanese History and Art. He also graduated from the local Japanese Language School (equivalent to junior college level) enabling him to speak and write Japanese characters fluently.
In his earlier years, he taught at Farrington High School and was the chairman of the Business Department. Soon after, he transferred to the University of Hawaii Community College at Pensacola and was appointed by the Provost to serve as Chairman for the entire Business Department. During this professional career, he was honored as outstanding educator by the Hawaii Business Education Association.
In addition, he was the Proprietor of Flowers by Lawrence on South King Street for 35 years where he was well known for his exquisite floral arrangements and wedding bouquets. He worked diligently but made time to relax and traveled extensively to many places in the world. However, his favorite was to his ancestral country, Japan, where he visited over 60 times and countless times to Las Vegas and won many jackpots. Lawrence, indeed, fulfilled his life’s dream leaving nothing he wished he had done.
He was predeceased in death by brothers, Iwao and Tokutaro; sisters, Dorothy Nakayama, Ellen Yamamoto, and Eleanore Maehara. Survived by sister, Laura Inake, and numerous nieces and nephews; companion and caregiver, Van Isotani; hanai couple and caregivers, Derrick and Sai; nieces and caregivers, Shirley and Nadine. Lawrence will be remembered as a highly talented man with a keen sense of humor and intelligence. “Memories flicker like lighted candle, a journey’s end”
- Haiku by Lawrence Shimazu
Private funeral services held at Nuuanu Memorial Cemetary.
