JOHN RICHARD EVANS

Posted On August 15th, 2012 -

JOHN RICHARD EVANS
July 18, 2012 marked the one year anniversary of the passing of John R. Evans. Born in Detroit, Michigan in 1917, Dad was the epitome of the “greatest generation.” Working at the Ford Motor Co. he earned money to attend Michigan State University and became the first in his family to attend college earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering.
As the U.S. was drawn into WWII he enlisted as an officer and served as a flight engineer on a B-29 bomber. He devoted countless hours in overseeing the maintenance and operation of the aircraft and took great pride in ensuring that his crew of the “Untouchable” made it home safety.
At the conclusion of the war he returned to Michigan State to complete his Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering and met our Mom, Phyllis Hamborsky. In 1947 Dad was offered a faculty position at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa to help build the fledgling engineering department and he served as a Professor of Civil Engineering for 34 years retiring in 1981 with Professor Emeritus status.
With the passing of our Mom in 1996, Dad moved to Sun City, AZ and reunited with the “girl next door” from his Detroit neighborhood and his date to the senior prom, Peggy Campbell. They were married and he lived out the rest of his life surrounded by her love, friends, and caring staff at the Royal Oaks Retirement Community.
He was laid to rest on August 15, 2011 on his 94th birthday along with our Mom at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific with full military honors. He is survived by his wife Peggy, sons Michael, Richard (Susan), David (Renee) and two granddaughters, Candice and Monique. Condolences to davee@hawaii.edu
