Augustine Van Horn Diamond

AUGUSTINE VAN HORN DIAMOND
Musician, labor leader, and community advocate Van Diamond, 73, passed away on August 5, 2012 at St. Francis Hospice in Ewa Beach. Born May 30, 1939 in Honolulu, Van attended St Louis College, graduated from Bellarmine College Prep in San Jose, CA, and received an AB in from the University of Notre Dame. Van’s career included work in the City & County of Honolulu, State of Hawaii Judiciary, the Hawaii Job Corps, Alu Like, Inc., and over 30 years combined with HGEA, AFL-CIO, Hawaii Musician’s Association and IBEW Local 1357. Van was an accomplished singer and upright bass player and performed at the Halekulani with his mother, Marion, and aunt, Lila Reiplinger, for 30 years as The Diamond Serenaders. He was a member of Hale O Na Alii since 1958 and chair of the Oahu Island Burial Council. He served on the boards for The Aloha United Way, Saint Francis Hospital, The Friends of ‘Iolani Palace and The Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame. Van is survived by wife, Kathryn; daughters Kalai (Nate Miyaki) and Malia (Damien) Lee, son David Keoni (Keiki) and their mother, Evagene Diamond; daughter-in-law Miyuki, stepdaughters Cayenne (Edward) Tote and Jill (Michael) Yang; 11 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren; cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by son, Eugene Iokepa Diamond. Celebration of life on Tuesday, August 28 at The Bishop Museum’s Atherton Halau from 4:30-8:30pm. Burial at a later date at Ale’amai, Hawai’i Island.

Dr. Chalmers Ken Hamasaki, 75, of Hilo, an ear, nose and throat specialist and an Air Force veteran who served in the Vietnam War, died in the Queen’s Medical Center.
