Alfredo Hernando Parubrub

Posted On September 7th, 2012 -

ALFREDO HERNANDO PARUBRUB
Passed away peacefully on August 11, 2012 in Makakilo, Hawaii. Born in Laoag, Ilocos Norte, Phillipines on February 17, 1931 to Caridad Hernando and Maximino Parubrub, he was the youngest of eight children with two sisters and five brothers. Alfredo’s father died three months after he was born and his mother raised the family in the barrio of Baay, Batac, Ilocos Norte.
On October 27, 1958, Alfredo married his beautiful bride Gregoria Sangalang Penuliar. Gregoria joined Alfredo in Yokosuka, Japan where Alfredo’s ship was homeported. Subsequent transfers moved the couple to different stations in San Diego, CA; Midway Island, Pearl Harbor, HI; and his last duty station, Long Beach, CA. Alfredo and Gregoria adopted their daughter Lisa in 1966 and their son Paul in 1972.
Alfredo’s education began in Ilocos Norte. He then completed his Nautical School at the Phillipine Merchant Marine School in Manila. He attended and completed basic logistic courses while serving in the U.S. Navy which he joined in 1955. Alfredo earned several awards and commendations throughout his naval career including Good Conduct medals, a Vietnam War medal, a National Defense medal and a Certificate of Merit unit commendation. After his naval retirement in 1975, Alfredo studied at Long Beach City College and completed Business Administration at Harbor City College while employed at Long Beach Naval Shipyard as an Equipment Specialist. His main goal after his naval retirement was to pursue another career. His second retirement in 1994 from Long Beach Naval Shipyard as a Marine Equipment Specialist marked 38 years of Federal service.
Even more important to Alfredo than his combined federal careers was his “career of high character”. One of Alfredo and Gregoria’s special life values was that of care and responsibility for their immediate and extended families. In the years from 1966 to 1980, they petitioned and brought to the U.S.A. their parents and in-laws, brothers, sisters, and their next of kin to be together.
It is said of the people of Ilocos Norte that they are very hardworking, but more significantly, very loving. Alfredo was forlorn at the passing of his beloved wife Gregoria in 1999 after 41 years of marriage. He remained a proud member of the Carson, CA community and continued as the patriarchal pioneer of his family in the Carson/Long Beach area. In his last few years, Alfredo relocated to Oahu, Hawaii, joining his remaining sister, Coleta Parubrub Alejandro and much extended family who gave him loving care and support. Alfredo will be remembered as a true gentleman, a family man, and a respected serviceman. He was proud of his achievements in both his naval and federal careers but especially his personal life. Alfredo shared his loving spirit with others always. We will forever miss him and reflect on his generous nature.
Visitation 9:00 a.m. Monday, September 10 at St. Jude Catholic Church in Kapolei. Funeral service 9:30 a.m. Burial 12:00 p.m. at Valley of the Temples Memorial Park in Kane’ohe. Luncheon to follow at Hilltop Chapel Lanai.
