Carol Jitsue Oda

She worked with her husband as the owners of Garden House as well as at City Mill Company Ltd., as Executive Assistant to the President where she retired. She is predeceased by her son Stephen Oda and her husband Stanley, and survived by her two grandsons, Mark and Luke Oda. Carol J. Oda started working for City Mill Company, Ltd. in 1955 as an Executive Assistant to the President, David Ai, and was instrumental to the growth of the retail division, from a small idea to become the main business of City Mill, when the wholesale division closed in 1980. She worked there until 1982, retiring at the age of 67. After a day of “retirement”, she came out of retirement to work part-time for the C. K. Ai Foundation and continued until 2010, at the age of 94, when she retired again.
In addition to her work at City Mill, she and her husband started the Garden House, a fixture at Piikoi and Beretania Streets in 1947, where it flourished for 60 years. With the passing of her son, Stephen, in 2006, Mrs. Oda decided in 2007, then 91, that it was time to close the store.
On Sunday August 26, Mrs. Oda passed away quietly in her home. She will be greatly missed by current and former City Mill Team Members, along with many friends in the community.
Mrs. Oda, you will be missed. We are forever grateful for your contribution to City Mill and what we are today.
