Posted On September 27th, 2012 -

LIEUTENANT CATHERINE LORI
JOHANN RYAN
31, passed away on 22 September 2012, at her home in Waialua, Hawaii.
She was born 6 July 1981, and was a 1999 graduate of Bayport-Blue Point High School, in Bayport, N.Y. During her time as a “Phantom”, she excelled both athletically and academically. Upon completion of her studies she was recruited and attended the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT. She graduated with the Class of 2003 earning a Bachelor of Science in Management.
Catharine reached a high level of achievement in both her basketball and volleyball careers. She earned numerous All-Conference honors and set many records. After completion of her studies, she served on the All-Navy volleyball team seven times. Each outing resulted in individual tournament honors, including her selection to the All-Armed Forces team. This elite group of athletes traveled across the world to countries such as Italy, India, and Brazil. Her accolades also included two trips to the World Military Games. In 2005, she was named Coast Guard elite female athlete of the year. She was admired and respected by all of her teammates, coaches and opponents.
During her athletic endeavors, she also attended flight training at NAS-Pensacola and was pinned in 2007. In her latest assignment, Lieutenant Ryan served as an MH-65C Aircraft Commander, CGAS-Barbers Point, Hawaii. Prior to this, she served as a deck officer aboard the USCGC RUSH (WHEC-723), home ported in Honolulu. Her past assignments included the now decommissioned USCGC SASSAFRAS (WLB-401), based out of Apria Harbor, Guam, and USCGC EAGLE (WIX-327), a 295-foot historic “tall ship”.
Lieutenant Ryan’s military decorations included the Coast Guard Achievement Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Coast Guard Expert Rifle Medal, Coast Guard Pistol Sharpshooter Ribbon, Coast Guard Special Operations Service Ribbon, Coast Guard “E” Ribbon, Coast Guard Sea Service Ribbon and numerous other unit awards and citations.
Catharine lived a fulfilling, adventurous and enjoyable life with her husband, Kyle Ryan, and pets on the North Shore of Oahu. They spent many years together–at home, on the sea, under the ocean and around the world.
Lieutenant Ryan is survived by her mother, C. Ann Demott of Sayville, NY, her father, Arthur R. Johann of Bayport, NY, her grandmother Constance Hoernel, and her siblings, Heather, Arthur F. and Eric and husband Kyle. She will be loved and missed forever, by many aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws, friends, commanders and subordinates.
She will be interred at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, “the Punchbowl”. The service will take place Friday, September 28th, at 3pm and will include full military honors.
In accordance with Catharine’s exact requests, and in lieu of flowers, donations are graciously accepted and may be sent to the Self Realization Fellowship (www.yoganatnda-srf.org). The SRF is dedicated to fostering a spirit of greater understanding and goodwill among the diverse peoples and religions of our global family, and to help those of all cultures and nationalities to realize and express more fully in their lives the beauty, nobility, and divinity of the human spirit.
