LT. COL. RONALD ANDREW GUSTIE (RET.)
Ronald A. Gustie, 81, of Mililani passed away at Tripler Army Medical Center on September 10, 2012. He retired from the United States Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel stationed at Camp H.M. Smith assigned to the Defense Logistics Agency. As a civilian he retired from the Defense Reutilization & Marketing Region of the Pacific where he served as a senior advisor to the Region Commander as the Chief of Marketing.
Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio he was an alter boy, sang solos in the church choir, played the accordion, performed on stage and excelled in sports. While attending Benedictine High School he played on the varsity basketball team and played on the 1948 City High School Football Championship team. As an all-star pitcher he earned a baseball scholarship to Ohio University.
While in college he married his high school sweetheart, Rita. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce degree, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. His first tour of duty took them to Northern France where they began their family. This was also the start of their incredible journey around the world which led them to Hawaii.
In his early days in the islands he served the community as a football and baseball coach where he taught the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship to local youth. He became an avid golfer which required patience and discipline. These values along with the importance of integrity, honesty and humility became the foundation in which he raised his children.
His greatest accomplishment and joy was his family. He worked hard to provide for them and wanted to ensure his children were given opportunities to succeed. He took pride in being a role model and taught them to be strong and independent.
Through it all, no matter what came his way he remained a man of honor and dignity, kept a sense of humor and a twinkle in his eye. He will truly be missed.
He is survived by his loving wife of sixty years, Rita; sons Thomas and Timothy; daughters Lorraine and Nicole; brother Gerald (Linda) of Cleveland, Ohio; granddaughter Jennifer (Ernest Bernard Fernandez); great-granddaughter Mia and his beloved chocolate beagle, Hershey.
Services will be held on Saturday, October 13 at Mililani Memorial Park & Mortuary. Visitation begins at 5:30 p.m. Committal services will take place on Monday, October 15 at Punchbowl National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific beginning at 1 p.m. Aloha attire.
